Pretty good presentation for a budget release, May 2 2008
This review is from: Mary Pickford Signature Collection (DVD)
This DVD contains 4 classic Mary Pickford films: Poor Little Rich Girl (1917), Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm (1917), Pollyanna (1919) and Little Annie Rooney (1925) plus a photo gallery of Mary photos, movie stills and movie promotional posters (set to some garish music). The photo gallery contains one picture that is NOT of Mary Pickford; it is a photo still of Mary Astor and Lon Chaney in The Phantom of the Opera. (Oh, how'd that get in there?).
The quality of Poor Little Rich Girl, Pollyanna, and Little Annie Rooney are very good and watchable. There are some minor picture disturbances that suggest this DVD contains VHS source transfers of these films in the making of this DVD collection. The quality of Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm is not the greatest; at times, the picture is fuzzy and over-exposed looking but still watchable. The music scores for 3 of the four films sounds like this weird circus organ-type sounding music that can get annoying after a while. The Rebecca film's score is more violin classic music.
All in all, this is a pretty good release considering you get 4 Pickford films in decent and watchable shape. These films have not been restored or released by the better silent movie restoration companies like Image Entertainment and Kino Video. Still, if you are curious to see what these 4 films of Mary's are like and if you're a diehard fan of hers, for $5.99 this release is well worth the money.
