Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Willig picks up where she left readers breathlessly hanging with 2005's The Secret History of the Pink Carnation. After discovering the identity of the Pink Carnation, one of England's most successful spies during the Napoleonic wars, modern-day graduate student Eloise Kelly is hot on the trail of the Black Tulip, the Pink Carnation's French counterpart. While researching the archives of dashing-but-grumpy Colin Selwick (a descendant of the Selwick spy family), Eloise learns that spy Purple Gentian (Richard Selwick) safely retired to the countryside; meanwhile, the Pink Carnation continues her mission with the help of Richard's younger sister. Spirited Henrietta Selwick discovers that the Black Tulip has resurfaced after a 10-year silence with the intent of eliminating the Pink Carnation. Miles Dorrington (Richard's best friend) works for the War Office and is directed to unearth the deadly spy. As he and Henrietta investigate, they try to deny their attraction for each other—and avoid becoming the Black Tulip's next victims. Hero and heroine can be quite silly, and there are overlong ballroom shenanigans aplenty; like last time, Eloise and Colin's will-they-won't-they dance isn't nearly as interesting as what takes place in 1803. No matter. Willig knows her audience; Regency purists may gnash their teeth in frustration, but many more will delight in this easy-to-read romp and line up for the next installment. (Jan.)

5.0 out of 5 stars The Flower Friends and Fiends have Struck Again, July 19 2008

This review is from: The Masque of the Black Tulip (Paperback)
This one is my favourite of the four (to date) novels in this series. Eloise, (the American Ph.D. researcher), and Colin (the handsome, snitty Brit who owns the family papers) find themselves at close proximity in the family country house. Things are beginning to kindle under the autumn moon. Enter Colin's velly velly upscale horswoman neighbour. Can an archivist feel torn between papers and passions? Or is the 'passion' on her side only?
Meanwhile, back in the past, Henrietta, sister of the Purple Genitain, tries to puzzle out the men in her life. A mysterious black suited man has taken an more than passing interest in her - much more than he did in the past, and her brother's best friend, comrade-in-arms and her 'sort of like a brother' is suddenly ... well ... taking a more than brotherly interest in keeping suitors (villianous or otherwise) away from her. If only Men came with Guidebooks!
And who is this arch-enemy who leaves black tulip calling cards on the people lying around London?

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book, Jun 15 2006
By
I picked this book up kind of by accident and then couldn't put it down. The style of the novel (sort of in the spirit of AS Byatt's Possession) is intriguing - the reader was given a glimpse into the life of the 21st Century historian while also following the adventures of the historical heroin in her research at the same time. It makes the "past" come alive. Loved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Napoleonic Page Turner!, Mar 31 2006

For fans of the first Lauren Willig book, the Secret History of The Pink Carnation, this sequel will blow you away! Unlike in "Pink Carnation," this novel follows the younger sister and best friend of the Purple Gentian, Henrietta and Miles. I for one found Henrietta to be a more relatable character than Amy, and Miles was perfect as "the male lead." One small criticism is the obviousness of the identity of the Black Tulip, but otherwise, good job Lauren Willig! This book kept me up reading all night and Im sure it will you too.
