Book Description

Humanity has reached the stars, joining the vast galactic community of alien species. But beyond the fringes of explored space lurk the Reapers, a race of sentient starships bent on “harvesting” the galaxy’s organic species for their own dark purpose.

The Illusive Man, leader of the pro-human black ops group Cerberus, is one of the few who know the truth about the Reapers. To ensure humanity’s survival, he launches a desperate plan to uncover the enemy’s strengths—and weaknesses—by studying someone implanted with modified Reaper technology. He knows the perfect subject for his horrific experiments: former Cerberus operative Paul Grayson, who wrested his daughter from the cabal’s control with the help of Ascension project director Kahlee Sanders.

But when Kahlee learns that Grayson is missing, she turns to the only person she can trust: Alliance war hero Captain David Anderson. Together they set out to find the secret Cerberus facility where Grayson is being held. But they aren’t the only ones after him. And time is running out.

As the experiments continue, the sinister Reaper technology twists Grayson’s mind. The insidious whispers grow ever stronger in his head, threatening to take over his very identity and unleash the Reapers on an unsuspecting galaxy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, Aug 10 2010
By
This review is from: Mass Effect: Retribution (Mass Market Paperback)
Third book from Drew Karpyshyn in the Mass Effect serie, the first two being Revelation and Ascension. Great in all areas. I wasn't able to let go of the book until I had finished it. It gives a deeper insight on the indoctrination process of the reapers. It brought me in the Mass Effect universe one more time, and I can't wait for the next book and game.

3.0 out of 5 stars A passable piece of videogame writing, Aug 2 2010

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Mass Effect: Retribution (Mass Market Paperback)
Retribution continues the Mass Effect 2 story line as Drew Karpyshyn continues to explore the Mass Effect universe in this his third Mass Effect novel. Redemption's story takes place shortly after the events of Mass Effect 2, and continues the story line two years after the end of the events in Mass Effect: Ascension. The story incorporates story elements and characters from the books and the games to form a cohesive and plausible story line that is interesting and at times it is filled with suspense and twists and turns. It is a short paperback that should take the average reader no longer than a weekend to read through - and while the plot is interesting the writing is lacking and the editing is weak. For a book based on a videogame, where our standards and expectations are low, it is a welcome addition to the Mass Effect story line. As a stand alone piece of fiction, it is weak and could have used some more time and talent. Three stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hard to see otherwise now... Thanks... :P, Mar 15 2012
This review is from: Mass Effect: Retribution (Mass Market Paperback)
I have truly, and to the fullest enjoyed Drew Karpyshyn's idea of, well basically, what the galaxy could hold for us.

I will admit this review will hold unfortunately hold no amazing writings or fantastic and persuasive ideas, BUT...
I have read Star Wars lore books, Gears of war, etc etc. and here I stand, dumbfounded by the concept of Mass Effect. The reason I praise Mr. Karpyshyn is because of his ability to
create a 'galaxy' shall we say... that I can completely believe in. Star Wars, COOL, but common..... Star Trek!? Cool! But wayyyy beyond the years of the Sheppard years.

The one thing we thus far can prove is untrue,

"Element Zero"
"Eezo"
Etc etc.

As far as we can prove thus far, we know pretty much the elements that make everything around us... SO FAR.... (thematic dan dan dan dannnnn music here)

Otherwise the 'galaxy' that is created in this 'world' is completely, (if you believe in life beyond us) FEASIBLE! The cultures, the everything is incredible!
author Drew Karpyshyn has done a beautiful job at writing codex entries, the lore books I have read into an entirety. If you do not know the story thus far, boy is it fun!
The main character's struggle seems so human in a world completely alien to us.

Thoroughly enjoyed this, have thus far lent it to 3 friends, two of which are "ME" fans, and one is now starting ME1 on Xbox360.

Thank you for the experience.

One, completely new nerd!
