Learning Complexities Made Easy,

I purchased this book when I decided to start messing about with AutoCAD.After using 3DS Max professionally since 2000, I found that my pre-existing knowledge of 3D was actually a hindrance while trying to learn AutoCAD. It was a case of "similar tools, different workshop". Many of the tools looked familiar, but worked differently and/or used different terminology. I've read "Mastering" books in the past from Sybex for other software packages, so I figured I'll give this one a shot. Definitely worth it. One thing to look for when buying these books is authorization by the software publisher. This book and its publisher are authorized by Autodesk. The book also has a section to help prepare you for Autodesk Certification. At first the book seemed to be slow going. It even pokes fun at itself about it at the end of one of the chapters. The redundancies of the first few chapters really prepares you for tasks later on. All of the essential tasks are covered early on, and there is a gradual build-up in difficulty and complexity. The first project is drafting a simple bathroom and learning how to re-use assets; an absolute must. In later chapters the book delves into 3D. The DVD that accompanies the book has some useful videos of AutoCAD in action along with narration. This can really help if the printed instructions seem difficult to follow. At times the book will even recommend watching a particular video. Also on the DVD are tutorial files, a trial version of AutoCAD 2012, and a few bonus chapters. In my opinion the book achieves its goal of teaching you how to use AutoCAD efficiently. I was personally able to retain and adapt what I learned, instead of "monkey see, monkey do", and not knowing what to do without the book. If you've bought "Mastering" books from Sybex before, you know what to expect.

The book is extensive in information but it's presentation is not the clearest. Also it would help if the images were in color. I wish I had purchased something else.

This book is very good for beginner and intermediate users. If, you are looking to learn about SHEET SET MANAGER, you won't find it here. They totally left out this topic.

I am a novice at using AutoCAD.Before ordering this book I have learned enough to do very basic 2d drawings of sail panels for Falcon Sails. [...] Now that I need to step up to 3d stuff, my just learn as I go approach does not work so well. I need to add to my knowledge base in a more structured way. So far, I have read 100 pages of this book starting with the more difficult 3d chapter. It is very well written. I rarely get lost and I am adding nicely to my autocad knowledge. I really like the way it assumes you know very little about the layout of autocad, and consistently describes each step in detail so you are not left searching around & get hung up on simple things. At the same time the consistency of process documentation allows you to breeze over the sentences you do not need. Even if you are an autocad expert, you may need this for a while when you step up from an older version of autocad. This book has had multiple editions before this one. It shows that it has been continually improved. Some people complained it is not in color. That would be better, but it is a minor issue. I will take the well written book over the color pictures every time. |
