Book Description

Oct 5 2009

The Nikon D90 is the long-awaited upgrade to the popular D80 digital SLR. The D90 sits between the D60 and D300 in Nikon's DSLR lineup, though many of its features come from its more expensive sibling.

In this book, Darrell Young provides a wealth of information and professional insights for owners of this powerful new camera. Each chapter explores the features and capabilities of the D90 in detail, surpassing basic user manuals by providing step-by-step menu setting adjustments coupled with illustrations and logical explanations for each option. Darrell Young's writing style allows the reader to follow directions in a friendly and informative manner, as if a friend dropped in to share his experienced knowledge without "talking down" to you, explaining the how and the why.

Darrell gives special emphasis to the amazing HD movie capabilities of the D90, which create new possibilities for the creative photographer.

Mastering the Nikon D90 is the fourth volume in the highly successful series of Nikonians Press camera books.

About the Author

Darrell Young (DigitalDarrell) is an information technology engineer by trade. He's been an avid photographer since 1968 when his mother gave him a Brownie Hawkeye camera.

Darrell has used Nikon cameras and Nikkor lenses since 1980. He has an incurable case of Nikon Acquisition Syndrom (NAS) and delights in working with Nikon's newest digital cameras.

Living near Great Smoky Mountains National Park has given him a real concern for, and interest in, nature photography.

He loves to write, as you can see in the Resources area of the Nikonians.org community. He joined the community in 2000 and his literary contributions led to an invitation to become a Founding Member of the Nikonians Writers Guild.

2.0 out of 5 stars A better index might help Feb 8 2011

A better index might help. I wanted to like this book, but I'm definitely the "odd reviewer out" of this batch of (so far) 5-star reviews. I started reading the book with a need to discover how to use the D90's external controls (the main and sub control-dials, and the related buttons) to do things like select an Aperture value (Av), shutter speed (S), or an ISO, having selected the relevant exposure mode (M, A, S or P) on the D90's exposure-mode dial. I spent a frustrating few hours looking for likely terms in the book's index, and scanning the text for the information in point-form. I had no luck.

The information is definitely there. It's just not that easy to find, either in the Table of Contents or the Index. My mistake was in looking for information on Aperture and Shutter speed. Instead, I should have looked at the section on Exposure Modes (pp. 32-35). The instructions are offered as brief narratives at the end of the explanations for each mode. Hopefully the book will prove more useful in other respects, as I become more familiar with my D90.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive Guide to the D90 Jan 23 2011
By Thinks-he's-an-expert Bill TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Darrell Young has obviously used Nikon cameras for many years. It is also apparent that he has actually used the D90 a significant amount and has tested certain camera funtions so that he can comment on exactly what they do. He's not just some guy summarizing the camera's manual to make a quick buck.

Mr. Young goes through all the camera menus and functions in great detail. For instance he writes an entire chapter on a thorough explanation of white balance. He writes another entire chapter on the autofocus system. These are very helpful to a photographer such as myself who is more familiar with 35mm manual cameras.

You probably won't go through this book as quickly as some others (see my other D90 guide review) . It took me about two weeks to fully digest it. However, if you want to buy one book on the D90 this is it.
