5.0 out of 5 stars Downton Goes From Strength to Strength Sept. 22 2013
By Brett H #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
With a global audience of over 125 million, Downton Abbey Season 4 is probably the most anticipated show this year. This number of followers is set to increase as Chinese State TV has, apparently, just started to broadcast it, although what the average Chinese will make of the antics of the Crawleys I shudder to think! This time round we pick up six months on from the tragic end to the Series 3 Christmas Special.

Downton has moved with the times, and, as usual, great care has been taken to make the setting, including all the small details, correct for the period. Hence clothes and hair styles have changed and advances in technology, such as the telephone and some new fangled electrical devices in the kitchen are evident. The cast has all the significant characters who survived the last series, so Maggie Smith continues as the matriarch who dominates every scene she is in, and Shirley MacLaine makes a welcome reappearance after her all too brief involvement in the previous series. Seeing her sparring with Maggie Smith must be one of the more memorable aspects of this show. There are some new face to look out for, one of whom is Kiri Te Kanawa, the New Zealand opera singer as well as a couple of other well known characters in cameo roles.

More of the scenes this time round have been filmed on location in London. Meanwhile at Downton itself, the antics and interaction of those ‘below stairs’ continues to contribute some very interesting story lines and their trials and tribulations are, in many ways, one of the most interesting aspects of the show. Above stairs initially Lady Mary is, understandably, rather subdued whilst Lady Edith really seems to be coming into her own having, perhaps, been somewhat overshadowed previously.

5.0 out of 5 stars Downton is incredible yet again... Feb. 6 2014
By TG TOP 1000 REVIEWER

I was hoping this season would contain all of the engrossing and entertaining plots and subplots yet again and I was not disappointed. The storylines are well-designed and acted superbly by the amazing cast. Filming locations and costumes are gorgeous, and throughout the story the viewer is brought through the same fantastic highs and lows of the previous seasons. The characters develop extremely well and their individual lives intertwine beautifully. I cannot get enough of this show! High praise for Julian Fellowes for once again displaying his incredible writing. (Just love Michelle Dockery and Maggie Smith!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Too short Feb. 10 2014
By One singular sensation... TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
It's all wonderful, though some of it is here and gone too soon. The pregnancy, the right suitor for Mary, Shirley MacLaine, and even Maggie Smith who gets the best lines and when given a chance to smile, shows that she is a gorgeous elderly lady and not a sour old hen; we needed more of all of them. The flaw is that there are too few installments in a show that is so wide in scope and has so many fascinating characters.
But always leave 'em wanting more is a saying that does work. Trouble is, a little more here would make me want Season Five even more!! There isn't another show on television that comes close, and the DVD set is better still for you can watch two, three, all of it! at once. And hopefully the next season will give Elizabeth McGovern more to do. She is a splendid actress but relegated here to a supporting character whose part is the most underwritten of all of the cast.
But if, like me, the series has grabbed you, this is a sure purchase. And a really good addition to any collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars totally worth it Feb. 1 2014
By Kath
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I had mixed feelings about Season 4 especially after the finale of Season 3, but I have to say despite everything, this was a wonderful season. The acting is still phenomenal, the costumes and sets are beautiful and the cinematography is stunning. All that aside, the story was plausible, despite having to make petty excuses as to why certain characters were no longer there and some questionable character development. In the end, more drama, more intrigue, more wit; and more tears on my part.

Not an exciting season but the writing and production value were as good as ever. Laid the groundwork for future complications.

5.0 out of 5 stars Downton Abbey Rocks
I really miss Lady Sybil, though. I'm happy to see that Edith is playing a more visible role in the series since she is the character who captured my heart from the very beginning. Read more
