Praise for Math Puzzles and Brainteasers

"Terry Stickels, well known as a master creator of puzzles for adults, has turned his attention to brainteasers for youngsters. His two books for children are superb collections of such problems. Like Goldilocks' third bed, they are neither too hard nor too soft, but just right. And I suspect that many parents will find themselves hooked on solving some of Terry's puzzles, especially his delightful frame problems."
Martin Gardner, puzzle creator and author

"This is a rich set of diverse mathematical problems that can enrich a math class, stimulate children to play with mathematical ideas, or give gifted children a chance to solve interesting problems that lie beyond the limits of most school mathematical curricula."
Michael Schiro, associate professor, Mathematics Education, Boston College

"I've always found puzzles to be great mental stimulators for kids, and Terry Stickels' varied, entertaining brainteasers are perfect for this purpose."
Will Shortz, crossword editor, The New York Times

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for teaching logic and thinking skills, Aug 29 2009
By Cynthia E. Downes "Cindy Downes" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Math Puzzles and Brainteasers, Grades 6-8: Over 300 Puzzles that Teach Math and Problem-Solving Skills (Paperback)
Someone once said, "Bad reasoning as well as good reasoning is possible; and this fact is the foundation of the practical side of logic."

Logic IS practical. By developing skills in logic, your child will not only improve math skills, but he or she will also learn important problem-solving skills. Problem-solving skills will help your child at school, home and work.

Math Puzzles and Brainteasers is the tool you need to help teach these important logic skills; and best of all, it's FUN! The book includes more than 300 math puzzles and critical thinking activities such as word puzzles, Sudoku, analogies, and cryptograms. Also included are word problems that cover subjects such as money, time, and measurements.

There's something for everyone, regardless of skill level. The math brainteasers require skills ranging from simple adding and subtracting to determining probability and algebraic thinking. And the answers, included in the back of the book, encourage students to redo the problem until they get the correct answer.

Besides being fun, Math Puzzles and Brainteasers provides practice in IQ-testing skills, which may earn your student a college scholarship! And who doesn't need that!

This review is from: Math Puzzles and Brainteasers, Grades 6-8: Over 300 Puzzles that Teach Math and Problem-Solving Skills (Paperback)
I teach at an urban school where academics typically aren't high on the priority list of most of my students. Using problems from this book, my students enjoy learning Math. I'll post a random problem and left it up to see who can guess it. There have been some interesting guesses before they get to the correct one, but it interesting to see how they come up with their solutions. It definitely makes them think. Worth getting if you are looking for a book to get your students interested in Math.

This book has great puzzles in it. My 8th grade math students could figure out some of the problems, but this could definetely be used with older students as well!
