My daughter loved the book and loved the movie. There are some differences between the book and the movie (check wikipedia, there is a list), but, unlike most Hollywood adaptations, the spirit of the book is intact. An amazing job. An amazing but thankless effort by Devito: faithful to the book, a great movie, admired by critics, but it lost money (well at the time wikipedia was updated, I expect DVDs have put it over the top by now) and some commercial reviews are weak (6.6 on IMDB, sigh). It does not have cartoons or explosions, but it is a great adaptation of a great book.

I'm a grade 5/6 teacher who read the Rauld Dahl book to his students. The kids loved it... and normally I don't like showing students movies, but this movie is my exception. The students loved comparing the differences between the two, and they also enjoyed watching how some of the special effects were created.

I purchased the movie Matilda having already seen it. It is a great family movie and we all like to watch it over and over again. Totally entertaining!!
