There are many solid, driving-down-the-dusty-road-in-an-old-convertible tracks on this disc; producer Don Smith (Tom Petty, U2, Bob Dylan) knows how to give the band an open field and the space to cruise through it. The track "What Are We Gonna Do Come the Month of September" is a perfect example with its wonderfully expansive Hammond organ-infused groove. The seven-minute-plus track, peaking with a two minute, perfectly languid exit, allows the players their chance to express a mood, and the audience their chance to feel it, without being rushed by the confines of pops three-minute radio rule. Torontos Now Magazine recently named Mays "Canadas most promising roots rock tunesmith," admittedly, the amazingly-talented Kathleen Edwards is also very deserving of that title, but as symmetry would have it, she joins Mays as co-vocalist on "The Plan", adding extra oomph to a track that deserves to be an outside-the-box radio hit this summertime. --Denise Sheppard

a hidden gem ... one to be cherished.,

This review is from: Matt Mays & El Torpedo (Audio CD)
while matt & co. aren't reinventing the wheel with this type of music (roots/country rock) or lyrical content, there is much to be said for the craftsmanship and workman-like approach to the album. the execution of slow-burners like 'what are we gonna do come the month of september' and 'cocaine cowgirl', that climax in a dizzying wall of guitar sonics, is what makes this album something special among its contemporaries that are often more posture than punch. Matt mays & el torpedo magnificently intermingle the lush, musical rootsiness of blue rodeo with the manic desperation of neil young without lifting directly from either. with that said, the most endearing quality of this disc is, perhaps, the honesty which permeates each and every track. in my earnest estimation this album should be regarded as essential listening due to its ability to grow with the listener.high points include (but are not limited to): 'stand down at sundown', 'travellin'', 'the plan', 'good people', 'on the hood' as well as the aforementioned 'cocaine cowgirl' and 'what are we gonna do come the month of september'. to sum it up: five years out this albums still grabs me every time i spin it and i have a feeling it will do the same for you, too! highly recommended listening, indeed!

From start to finish this CD is simply superb. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who likes rock music. There is a definite Tom Petty & Neil Young feel to this CD, but it is still original sounding.

Wicked come Matt Mays and El Torpedo,

It seems a little unfair to compare a new band to some of rock and roll (and gator rock's) legends . . . but one can't help but make the well-deserved comparison here. Neil Young, Crosby Stills and Nash, Tom Petty all infused with a distinct feeling of Canadiana best describe the sound of Matt May's 2nd album. But there is something else to the sound, an almost intangible quality that can't be describe by quoted rock legends past and present. Something that may very well have been lacking from similar releases from similar artists in the past ten years. There is an effortlessness to the textured soundscape here that can only be attributed to true talent and well put-to-use influence. Instead of recreating a mish-mash of sounds made comfortable to the ear by over 40 years of listener-ship, Matt Mays and company have managed to craft a wholly unique sound reminiscent of past greats without simply becoming a tribute to them. This may be the greatest compliment paid to bands of this type (Sam Roberts, The Novaks, etc) because the only fault attributed to these bands can be best described as 'a refreshing burst of indie rock unoriginality.'Road trip rock may be the freshest sound coming out of the east coast of Canada these days and Matt Mays and El Torpedo have proven with their second release that they are unquestionably at the top of the pack in their (albeit small) genre. Keep a close eye on these guys, you'll be hearing their name more and more as the years go on.
