Disappointed it didn't work with iPad air and wasn't very well advertised as such.

This was a Christmas gift for my nine year old daughter. Lots of fun and no mess! Parental assistance required to remove iPad from unit but other than that a great purchase. Fun for all ages.

Cheap, Version 1.0 feel to it but a bunch of fun. Oct. 4 2013

Actually I feel it is 3.5 stars but that isn't an option on Amazon

First, a warning. All of these "toys" that involve using your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch carry the risk of damaging the device. This happens because the normal protect case/covering you keep it inside must be removed before use and re-applied afterwards.

Anytime you handle such a fragile item without a case, you are taking a risk. These toys have feedbacks to prove this (including this one where a customer's daughter broke her iPad). PLEASE require kids do not move these toys and you, not your child, should remove the case and install/remove the devices always.

+ Actual "game play" is quite fun and even adults enjoy playing with it.
+ Good game play for groups of girls, even sleepover activity worthy.
+ App seems to work well.
+ Fun concept and use of existing iPad helps keep cost down.
+ Good value depending on actual market selling price.

+/- Requires AA batteries which are not included.
+/- Requires an iPad or iPad Mini (but I only recommend using a full sized iPad)
+/- Does not support first gen iPad.
+/- Requires you access iTunes to download the APP.
+/- Requires you pair the bluetooth device.

- Requires you remove any case/skin before inserting the iPad.
- Works with iPad Mini but is really designed for a full sized iPad. I do not recommend it for iPad Mini.
- Lights should be brighter, they are more of a prop instead of being useful.
- Makeup brush isn't touch screen compatible like you expect it to be.
- Case/Frame build quality is disappointing.
- Does not feel like it is a good value at list price.

Overall, I feel it is a decent product but really needs to be better made to warrant the asking price set by Mattel.

Loads of fun for teens and `tweens who want to use makeup ... Nov. 10 2013
By D. Fowler - Published on Amazon.com
Vine Customer Review of Free Product
You don’t have to have a young Barbie fan for them to enjoy this makeup console. Any young lady who is interested in makeup will love working with the Barbie Digital Makeup console sans the mess. Looking like anything from a princess to a movie star is just at the tip of the Applicator wand. Don’t like the look? Simply step away from the front of the console, use the virtual cotton swab or washcloth and begin again. It’s just that easy.

First, before you can even start, you need to pair this with your iPad. Most Bluetooth devices assume that you know how to do it, but not everyone does. Complete instructions, including visuals, are included in the instructions. If you can find your settings icon, you can set up the Barbie Digital Makeup console. Once you have paired a notification will pop up and you’ll be able to head to the App Store to download the free Barbie Digital Makeover app (you simply type in in the search).

The console assembly is very quick and easy. If you have an iPad mini there is a plastic adapter included. Once you slip your iPad in the frame, secure the latch, and get the iPad to recognize the applicator wand, you’re good to go. The nice thing is that the frame can be tilted. There are tutorials the young makeup artist can watch right on the screen. Loads of fun for teens and `tweens who want to use makeup!

Very expensive mistake I made when I purchased this! No matter what we do we cannot get it to function as advertised. We have followed all of the directions with no success. I purchased this in advance of granddaughters birthday and now cannot it return it because of the time limit. Not a happy shopper with this item ! !

Hit and miss Oct. 25 2013

At the time of this review, Amazon lists this Digital Makeover Mirror for ages 36 months - 9 years, but the box says 6+. I got it for my 4-year-old daughter to play with, so she's technically a little young. That said, I was amazed how well my daughter held still and kept her face centered on the screen. This is partly why this toy was so disappointing; even when done right it didn't work well.

I don't know if this works better on a Retina display, but on the iPad 2 it struggles. The resolution on the iPad 2's front-facing camera is pretty low; so the projected image is full of noise and pixels. But I could live with that.

Unlike some reviewers, I didn't have a problem with the Bluetooth dropping out. The connection stayed strong and consistent for me. What I had issue with was the makeup application. We spent over an hour trying to get it to work correctly. Both my daughter and I took turns synchronizing our faces with the applicator wand. The facial recognition worked instantly, but the applicator wand took several tries. From there we'd use the wand, but it would only occasionally place makeup on our digital image.

The slightest movements broke the facial sync, so we'd repeatedly have to hold still until our faces were recognized again. This got annoying to the point of becoming frustrating. My daughter would keep asking, "Why isn't it working, Daddy?" And all I could say was, "I don't know. It should be."

Adding masks and sunglasses seemed to work OK, at least, as long as our faces were synced, but the makeup application was hit and miss (mostly miss). In the end, it was more work than fun.

...It's the LIGHTING March 3 2014
By lisalisa_23452 - Published on Amazon.com
I had to write this review for all the frustrated daughters and mothers...Okay, so I purchased the first mirror for Christmas for my daughter and of course she loved it. That was short lived because I had a hard time getting the device to sync with the makeup brush/pen (when you have to fill up the pen on the screen). For some reason I could never get the brush/pen to fill up on the screen and the device would just jump from this screen to the one where you are supposed to synchronize your face and it would just make that same beeping clicking noise which drove me nuts. Needless to say I returned that mirror to Toys R Us and had another one shipped to us.

The second makeover mirror did the same thing as the first one when we first received it. The same jumping back and forth between the two screens whenever my daughter tried to put on makeup and the same clicking beeping noise. I was frustrated and didn't know what else to do and so I had resolved in my mind to chalk this one up to experience and keep it moving. I told my daughter that her Barbie digital makeover mirror wasn't working and that we had to return it and she could get something else in its place.

Anyway, when I told my sister in law what happened, she took the mirror in the kitchen and tried to play with it. And of course the mirror worked for her, no problem. No jumping screens, no, clicking beeping noise, no gliching...nothing and the pen immediately filled up for her. But when I tried, it still didn't work for me so for some reason I thought about the lighting, like maybe I needed to be more lit up for the mirror to read my face. So, I found the brightest light in my house, the bathroom and as soon as I stepped underneath the bright light, my face lit up and was in sync and when I put the brush/pen in the outline it filled up and I was able to play with the makeup for the first time.

I wanted to know if this was a fluke one time thing or not so I took the mirror into my din which has another bright light and it worked for me in there too. The light in our bedroom is not that bright and that is the only place where my daughter would play with it because she has her own play corner with all of her toys and a table and chairs. So, I changed one of the lamps in our bedroom to an LED light bulb which is super bright but it also saves energy (win/win) and moved it right next to the table where she plays with her mirror. And when my daughter wants to play with her Barbie mirror she knows to turn on the lamp and it works like a charm now, every time.

The only reason why I gave this 3 stars is because of the mess we had to go through in the beginning and basically I had to figure it out on my own. I'm not sure if Mattel mentions sitting in bright light for this to work but if not that should be one of the first things they mention. I'm not saying that this is going to fix all of the problems and gliches with this mirror, I'm just letting you know what worked for us.
