Trying hard to be something is a hard thing to do when your competing with Sin City etc. Not a bad movie and you can see the hard work put in. Disappointing though at best.

Max Payne is one of those movies that I like and everyone else hates. It's more of a guilty pleasure, since I know it's a piece of crap, but it's an enjoyable piece of crap, like Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, or A Good Day to Die Hard (which frankly felt more like a Die Hard film than Live Free).
There are two copies of this movie, and I'm not just talking about the separate theatrical/unrated versions of the movie (which this copy includes both of), I'm talking cover art-wise. There's this superior cover with the graffiti Max and his gun in a badass pose (SUPERIOR!!) and the crappy Max walking away from a snowy river with two shotguns in his hands (LAME). I had the latter copy for a while and was very unsatisfied with it mainly because the cover art sucked and my grandmother wrote my name all over it in permanent marker (I'm weird like that). So now I've got this much-coveted copy in good time and perfect condition (as it should've been since it was new). I enjoy the unrated version much better since it's got more blood, more violence, and more foul language, and just feels more faithful to its dark, brooding mood. I haven't played the original games so I can't make a comparison between the movie and the games (as I understand the movie SEVERELY strays away from the game storyline), but I enjoy this movie for what it is. The mood, the look, the noirish lighting, the action (while not SUPER AWESOME SPECTACULAR) made it worth watching every once in a while.
Just turn your brain off and enjoy.
