Product Description

From Booklist

The end is near . . . or is it? So reads the tagline of Book 3 of the Maximum Ride series, suggesting that Patterson's best-selling series for YAs may expand beyond the trilogy originally planned—news that will be greeted enthusiastically by fans of its 14-year-old heroine. Slated for extermination by their scientist creators, rebel-mutant Max and other members of her flock, all of whom possess bird DNA and functioning wings, are on the lam again, their mission to save the world from a eugenics plot. Affection for the dauntless characters and misadventures that build on universal yearnings about sprouting wings and taking flight will hold readers. Mattson, Jennifer --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing- You'll Soar Higher and Farther Than Ever Before, Mar 12 2008
As the third installment of the Maximum Ride series, this book takes up where the last one left off: the Flock is once more on the run. After deciding that they need a permanent place to call home, they go off in search of one, only to have Max and Fang's relationship get even more confusing while on the road. Eventually they are captured and brought back to the School, where they are held captive before escaping, with a little help from... Ari. Enemy-turned-friend, Fang doesn't trust the Eraser, who has tried to kill him many times before, and soon the Flock is torn apart as the two head honchos split up, the girls sticking with Max, and the guys following Fang. AS they go their seperate ways, each group comes up with a different plan on saving the world from total destruction, but it's only when they're back together that they feel whole once more.
I loved the third book: it has romance, adventure, and even a little bit of tragedy to make you heartsore. The message is clear: even when you're saving the world, family is one of the most important things you'll ever have, and you can't take it for granted.
The ending left enough room for a sequel, and even if you didn't read the next book, it has a very satisfying ending.

4.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, Aug 26 2007
Max and the flock are back. While she continues to keep the flock safe, she also has to figure out how she is supposed to save the world. The evil plan is days away from unfolding. Half of the people in the world are going to be killed in order to give the worthy ones that remain a chance to thrive. The human race has done such a poor job of taking care of the planet that the Itex Corporation decided only the people with something to offer deserve the right to live in it.

Another problem the flock is dealing with is the creation of an updated version of Erasers. Now made of metal and covered with a layer of skin, learning how to take them out takes a little time - especially since these "Flyboys" come equipped with guns!

Relationships are strained within the flock in this latest installment of the MAXIMUM RIDE saga. Fang continues to update his blog and attempt to enlist children from around the world to become involved with the fight against Itex and all its subsidiaries. Max doesn't have faith that kids can help, which, of course, causes friction between them and ultimately leads to a split in the group.

The reader is tugged along on a roller coaster ride adventure with Max's constant sarcastic commentary to guide them. We see familiar faces as well as meet brand new players in this deadly game. Max manages to thwart disaster, reconcile the flock, and discover the identity of her parents. James Patterson does a nice job of tying up loose ends and leaves the story with a satisfying ending. If there isn't a fourth installment, fans will be happy with the way Max and the rest of the flock land on their feet.

4.0 out of 5 stars My students LOVE it!, Jun 2 2007
By R. Radebaugh "Rad teacher" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports: A Maximum Ride Novel (Hardcover)
I am a sixth grade teacher in Orem, Utah and my students have fallen in love with the Maximum Ride books. I have been a long time fan of Patterson's adult fiction and always thought my students would love his quick page turning style. I was right. When Max 1 came out a couple years ago it quickly became their favorite. I wrote to James and commented on my students' love for Max and the gang so he sent me an advanced reader's copy of Max 2. It was a great lesson to my kids that authors care about their audience. It helped increase their love for the stories and, ultimately, reading. Max 3 came out this May with only a day left of school, so we held a read-aloud-a-thon and read Max 3 for the entire school day. We ended up about 3/4 of the way through and the students were screaming when they had to go home (a teacher's dream). The books are wonderful for kids who do not like books. I have had dozens of students begin a love for reading all different books as a result of Maximum Ride. I cannot thank James Patterson enough for inspiring kids to love reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a ride!, Sep 11 2007
By P. Baver - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports: A Maximum Ride Novel (Hardcover)
What a ride! I'm an adult with teenagers and I often read what they read. This book is a great ride. It's written mostly in the first person with down-to-earth street language (minus the curse words) which works well. By the middle of the book you find yourself convinced that the mutant characters could exist; their world is real. We can't wait till the rest in the series comes in the mail!

2.0 out of 5 stars If you're too lazy to plot, simply proceed with the convenient and leave behind the unexplained., May 22 2008
By John M. Kimpel - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports: A Maximum Ride Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
So the white coats decide to kill the flock, but instead of gassing the flock to death in the flock's room, the white coats gas the flock unconscious in the room and then take the kids outside and lock them in a barred cage in the middle of a field where the they're allowed to regain consciousness so they can be shot by "men with guns," apparently through the bars on one side of the cage without hitting the bars on the other side of the cage, thus sparing the spectators, who have already arrived although the men with guns have not, which gives Ari time to rip open the bars of the cage allowing the flock to escape while the white coats fail to invoke the unexplained weapon that neutralized Max and Fang on page 129 where Angel, apparently with Max's consent, fails to intervene in order to make possible an excursion that neither of the characters would ever have considered.

Prefer stories that proceed by the author's arbitrary choices? This one's for you. Not insulted by attempted manipulation? It doesn't get much better than this.
