New Edition - With 5 New Arguments!

Hockey’s most controversial authority gives you everything you need to know to be Canada’s best-informed armchair coach.

Sports talk-radio personality Bob McCown knows what he’s talking about, and he’s not afraid to say what’s on his mind. Depending on your own strongly held opinions, some of Bob’s will have you cheering in agreement while others will tempt you to throw the book out the window (if you weren’t enjoying the damn thing so much). McCown’s Law will be fuelling and informing heated discussions at the bar for years to come.
A sample of Chairman Bob’s opinions:

-The Leafs haven’t won the Stanley Cup in 40 years for a perfectly logical reason: they have the crappiest players.
-It’s time the law put hockey’s most violent offenders in something more restrictive than the penalty box.
-Let’s leave Olympic hockey to the men.
-Eric Lindros won’t end up in the Hockey Hall of Fame, but he still deserves to be mentioned right alongside the all-time greats.
-Slovakia, not Canada, may just be the greatest hockey nation
on Earth.
-The Ottawa Senators. Are these guys a bunch of chokers or what?

About the Author

Known for his take-no-prisoners debating style and dry wit, Bob McCown is host of The Fan’s “Prime Time Sports,” syndicated throughout Canada on radio and simulcast nationally on Rogers Sportsnet. Prime Time has been the number one sports radio program in Canada for 17 consecutive years. At the Sports Radio Conference in Arizona this March, Bob McCown was named “Air Talent of the Year.” He was born in Columbus, Ohio, but now resides in Toronto.

David Naylor has been a sportswriter for The Globe and Mail since 2000. He is also a regular guest on CBC radio and television and is frequently seen on TSN’s The Reporters with Dave Hodge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hockey's best, Nov 29 2007
I was shocked to find out that sports talk-radio personality Bob McCowan was originally from Columbus, Ohio. He's so perfectly Canadian that you'd never know! And boy, does he know his hockey. All this aside, he's got a great personality and wit, all of which just makes the game that much more interesting.

Bob's opinons are not for the faint-hearted and he's not one to pull any punches, but he knows his stuff and it shows in this book. Would also recommend the book MAPLE LEAFS TOP 100 and HOCKEY NEWS TOP 60 for other books in this genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long Time Broadcaster, First Time Author, Oct 31 2007

I haven't got this book yet but have been waiting for it tapping my foot like Sonic the Hedgehog. It'll be the first sports-related book I've bought in a LONG time. If it has the personality of the FAN 590's Bob McCown, drive-time host of Prime Time Sports (with the support of The Globe and Mail's Dave Naylor) then it'll be well worth the $14.56 it costs.

For those who don't know him McCown has been around in various incarnations on TV and most famously radio for the last 30+ years. The best way to describe his on air personality is if Hugh Laurie's TV character HOUSE became a radio talk show host. In another way it's like the Jack Benny Show where you have all your recurring characters as they walk in and out of the show. It's been incredibly consistent except the time when recurring co-host Stephen Brunt walked out for a run on the ill-fated Team 1050, which tried to compete with McCown. Magnanimously Bob let Brunt back into the fold after being left out in the cold upon The Team's inevitable failure. He brought Brunt back from his banishment in NewFoundland.

As per the title it explores the 100 greatest hockey arguments. I have to hand it to him if you want to sell a book the best way to do it is sell it to the "Hockeypucks" as Bob affectionately calls them. It will be interesting to see how much is familiar from the show and how much is a new take. The only problem with this book being a hockey based one is that McCown can't take on the Soccer fans. That's always a fun conversation.

Maybe the next book?

So far only 25% of people have found my review helpful. I didn't know soccer fans would bother reading!
