Book Description

Feb 1 2009
Drugs, weapons, migrant labour, women — these are just a few of the many goods that effortlessly cross national borders in this globalized age, often without the knowledge or permission of the nations concerned. How is this remarkable criminal feat managed? From gun runners in the Ukraine, to money launderers in Dubai, cyber criminals in Brazil, racketeers in Japan, and the booming marijuana industry in western Canada, McMafia builds a breathtaking picture of a secret and bloody business. Internationally celebrated writer Misha Glenny crafts a fascinating, highly readable, and impressively well-researched account of the emergence of organized crime as a globalized phenomenon and shows how its secret and bloody business mirrors both the methods and the rewards of the legitimate world economy. Employing his journalistic talent and his prior experience covering organized crime in Eastern Europe, Glenny reports on his travels around the planet to investigate this worrying and worsening situation. After comprehensively surveying the criminal scene, Glenny ends by considering the future of organized crime. McMafia is an important book that assembles all the pieces of this worldwide puzzle for the first time.

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Former BBC World correspondent Glenny (The Balkans, 1804–1999) presents a riveting and chilling journey through the myriad criminal syndicates flourishing in our increasingly globalized world, which make up as much as 20% of global GNP. Tracing the growth of organized crime—ranging from the burgeoning sex trade in volatile, postcommunist Bulgaria to elaborate Internet frauds in Nigeria—Glenny expertly combines interviews with key players, economic studies and sociological analysis. He argues that the chaos and political upheaval following the demise of communism in Eastern Europe, along with increasing demand in the West and the easy flow of money and people provided the perfect opportunity for organized crime to gain a foothold on the dark side of the globalizing economy. Glenny's achievement is in introducing readers to the less familiar aspects of global crime, from Kazakhstan's caviar mafia to the flourishing marijuana trade in British Columbia. Consequently, his interview subjects are equally varied: sex slaves in Tel Aviv, a co-conspirator in the deadly 1993 Mumbai bombings and top Washington policy makers share the pages. Readers yearning for a deeper understanding of the real-life, international counterparts to The Sopranos need look no further than Glenny's engrossing study. 16 pages of photos; maps. 100,000announced first printing. Mr. Glenny provides a survey of criminal activity around the world and how it is benefiting from globalization as it occurred with the break up of the Soviet Union and the liberalization of international finance and commodity markets. Mr. Glenny talks of how organized crime has no allegiance to its country of origin. The Serbs were willing to allow weapons to their enemies in Bosnia, Croatia and Albania in exchange for oil during the early 1990s. Poppies have become an integral part of the Afghan economy, so important that the author does not feel the Taliban can be defeated so long as we allow criminal organizations to control it. Cannabis is a six billion dollar industry in British Columbia. U.S. officials are concerned about the sale of these products in their country yet B.C. pot accounts for only 2% of the marijuana sales in that country. The cartels in Columbia are making difficult the lives of peasant farmers as the militias they sponsor and which the government gives tacit approval seize their land under the auspices of fighting FARC, the communist freedom fighters. Criminal activity is said to account for between 15 and 20 percent of economic activity in the world. This is an issue that cannot be ignored.
