This review is from: McMafia (Hardcover)
Mr. Glenny provides a survey of criminal activity around the world and how it is benefiting from globalization as it occurred with the break up of the Soviet Union and the liberalization of international finance and commodity markets. Mr. Glenny talks of how organized crime has no allegiance to its country of origin. The Serbs were willing to allow weapons to their enemies in Bosnia, Croatia and Albania in exchange for oil during the early 1990s. Poppies have become an integral part of the Afghan economy, so important that the author does not feel the Taliban can be defeated so long as we allow criminal organizations to control it. Cannabis is a six billion dollar industry in British Columbia. U.S. officials are concerned about the sale of these products in their country yet B.C. pot accounts for only 2% of the marijuana sales in that country. The cartels in Columbia are making difficult the lives of peasant farmers as the militias they sponsor and which the government gives tacit approval seize their land under the auspices of fighting FARC, the communist freedom fighters. Criminal activity is said to account for between 15 and 20 percent of economic activity in the world. This is an issue that cannot be ignored.

Insight for people on our planet with us.,

This review is from: McMafia: A Journey Through the Global Underworld (Paperback)
Our world is smaller than people think and it is good to know about people whom are living with us on this planet. Not everybody can be on the up and up, so to speak, so if the news doesn't get through, then you need to read some books. I'm sure it can't have been an easy book to write as it is about people whom can be very powerful. I think everyone has a right to know about people whom are very powerful, just the same, since they can change things around us so abruptly and maybe not for the better. The environment suffers and we need to be able to get along with each other better for the sake of the place we all live in. An important and insightful book, I thought.
