Well it really is a great series, simple pokemon type formula, with a far less cruel design. The story is about a kid named Ikki who wants to be the best medafighter, medafighters use medabots... bla bla bla... This is a series that can take itself seriously, but isn't afraid to laugh at itself. The only downside to this boxset, is that shout hasn't seemed to make the second season, and watching it online sucks.

The artwork used on the DVD menu, and the cases aren't from the first season of Medabots. Not sure if all of it is wrong, but there are definitely incorrect images of characters who aren't even in Season 1. Which is a huge oversight, not really a big deal to me, but worth noting.

The only 'extras' are a sneak peak for some other Shout! Factory release. There's no subtitles. No Japanese audio, though I think the dub is mostly perfect (some one episode side characters have some weird voices, otherwise they're great).

Sadly, Shout! Followed the stupid dub order of the episodes. Which means that the episodes that were made in order for the story in Japan, are all out of order. Some episodes from early Season 1 were moved to early Season 2 for the dub. And in this process, they moved a Season 2 story arch to Season 1. Except, they left a key episode in that arch in Season 2. So it's missing in Season 1.

Which does affect the story. They reference already battling someone, and you've never seen that happen. Then you question yourself and think you skipped an episode or lost your memory of it completely. Or you view it as a total oversight by the writers. When it's just a company changing around the episode order for no real benefit to anyone. And in the episode that is supposed to follow the MIA episode they continue with some 'training' that was setup in the MIA episode. You have no understanding as to how the training began, because it's an odd pairing, and it's just annoying that they did that and for this release didn't feel it was a good idea to fix the issue.

Otherwise, it's a good set. The quality of each episode is great. Just a shame Shout! Didn't release Season 2. You can get Season 2 in Volumes released by another company (who also released Season 1 in Volumes), but some of them are pricey since they're all out of print.

Very good series! Sept. 3 2008

An amazing anime that often gets short-changed. Almost no-one has herd of it, but I loved every minute of it. The first season is one of great (although the second season is my favorite!) This show has a nice balance between comedy and action, which many shows have trouble nailing. This collection is missing one episode of the first season, but that is available if you truly need to have every one. Its a great gift for any kid if you give it a chance, and while it dose not contain the Japanese audio- it is not a big deal as this is one of the most accurately translated dubs I have ever seen. The show did not do well when aired because it was put out at the same time a pokemon, but when I saw the show- It had a lot more depth of character then the often shallow episodes of pokemon and while I gave up on pokemon a while a go- this still has a nostalgia factor even enticing to an adult. If you give it a chance- it may not be your favorite show as it was mine, but it is definitely worth the price for the classic episodes of this hard to find anime. You will be hard pressed to find a more interesting character then Metabee in a children's cartoon.

Probably a pirate but the episodes are still good. Nov. 29 2013

I enjoyed the product. The episodes I purchased were the same as those I saw on tv.

I agree with D. Mapes (Doenaught) who posted on October 2 2009, where they wrote that the animation on the box and the startup menu was not from season 1 and a few episodes are missing, which also suggests that this is a pirate copy.

But I still believe the actual episodes are still good.
If you are a completionist and you want every single episode of season 1 with the correct animation and box set, then this is not for you, but if you only want to enjoy the anime and like me you use to watch this in your local morning cartoon show and loved it, then this is still good.

Overall I enjoyed the product.

I remember watching this show on TV when I was a kid, I have loved it ever since then and glad that I have managed to finally get a hold of the first season.
