5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for nursing students and nurses, July 10 2011
By Tazz "Ann" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Medical Dosage Calculations For Dummies (Paperback)
As a nurse, and having had to teach nursing students and graduate nurses, you want a book that you can refer to, is easy to understand and has a good clinical relevance. What I like about this particular book is that it not only tells you how to do a drug calcualtion, but gives the clinical background as well. It reads well and is easily understandable. . Why is this important? Because a nurse's first job is to be a patient advocate. Understanding when to give a medication is as important if not more important than knowing how to calculate the dosage and administer the medication. I highly recommend this book to any nursing, pharmacy, or health professions student or anyone in their nursing careers who wants a book to supplement their own text as a good bedside reference. I like the Dummies series as a whole in this regard. It can also help you prepare for a test, such as a board examination.

4.0 out of 5 stars medical dosage calculations for dummmies, Aug 24 2011

This review is from: Medical Dosage Calculations For Dummies (Paperback)
I have just completed reading most of Medical Dosage Calculations for Dummies, and since I'm up against the "knife" so to speak with a surgery of my own in 2 weeks, I figured I better finish reading the book and write a review. I found MDCFG to be very informative, especially for anyone in the medical field who deals with dosing on a regular basis, or for anyone considering a career in this field. However, having said that, and even though the target audience for this book is medical professionals, from a patient (or about to be patient) point of view, there is still a lot of good information to be gained from the book. The authors have inserted just enough humor along with the more serious stuff to keep the book light and enjoyable. My copy of MDCFD has many dog-eared pages that I found to be very useful, especially in chapters 5, 6, & 7. And yes, my copy of Medical Dosage Calculations for Dummies will most definitely be with me in my hospital recovery room to, and I paraphrase a few words here from page 106, to make sure my nurses are getting all 6 of my medical administration "Rights" correct, and if for no other reason, to just give the nurses dosing me a hard time. Well done Barry and Dr. Snyder.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book! Great for nursing students and RNs., Jun 29 2011

Maybe it's unusual for an author to review his own book. But I will say this: Dr. Rich Snyder (co-author) is one of the best docs around, and this book was edited multiple times by Wiley. I also like the Amazon discounted price.

It's a good book, and any nursing student will find it to be VASTLY more helpful than the "required" text at his/her college. We know, because we looked at them all. Overpriced and obscure (in my humble opinion).

Dig into this one. There are lots of easy, great calculations. The most important thing is that Rich gives you a CLINICAL perspective. You see what works in several specialized environments -- critical care, OB/GYN, diabetic care, etc. The competitors fall FAR SHORT.

By the way, this book is also a big value if you are a parent, a caregiver, a diabetic, or looking at dialysis. You can't beat that, even with a large stick!
