Book Description

A Comparison of Martial Arts Training & Real-World Violence Experienced martial artist and veteran correction officer Sgt. Rory Miller distills what he has learned from jailhouse brawls, tactical operations and ambushes to explore the differences between martial arts and the subject martial arts were designed to deal with: Violence. Sgt. Miller introduces the myths, metaphors and expectations that most martial artists have about what they will ultimately learn in their dojo. This is then compared with the complexity of the reality of violence. Complexity is one of the recurring themes throughout this work. Section Two examines how to think critically about violence, how to evaluate sources of knowledge and clearly explains the concepts of strategy and tactics. Sections Three and Four focus on the dynamics of violence itself and the predators who perpetuate it. Drawing on hundreds of encounters and thousands of hours spent with criminals Sgt. Miller explains the types of violence; how, where, when and why it develops; the effects of adrenaline; how criminals think, and even the effects of drugs and altered states of consciousness in a fight. Section Five centers on training for violence, and adapting your present training methods to that reality. It discusses the pros and cons of modern and ancient martial arts training and gives a unique insight into early Japanese kata as a military training method. Section Six is all about how to make self-defense work. Miller examines how to look at defense in a broader context, and how to overcome some of your own subconscious resistance to meeting violence with violence. The last section deals with the aftermath—the cost of surviving sudden violence or violent environments, how it can change you for good or bad. It gives advice for supervisors and even for instructors on how to help a student/survivor. You’ll even learn a bit about enlightenment.

This review is from: Meditations on Violence: A Comparison of Martial Arts Training & Real World Violence (Paperback)
If you are interested in Reality Training then read this book.

I read and watch a lot of anything connected to martial arts.

I am very interested in teaching a method that might help my students protect themselves or others.

I am only saying this so that you readers know I have read and seen a lot of material to compare Sgt. Rory Miller's book "Mediations on Violence: A Comparison of Martial Arts Training & Real World Violence" to.

Trust me this book is solid gold.

This book is a gleaming gem for any martial artist who wants to present honest real training.

Not only is the material solid gold but I must commend Rory on the excellent writing and editing. The book reads well and flows from one topic to the next with ease. A quality piece of writing.

The book gives you a lot to think about and hopefully will make you run back to the drawing board to either make sure what you are doing and teaching is where you want it or it will help get you there. I know that is where I am going.

Careful reading though many cold buckets of water will be tossed your way.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic book on real world violence, Aug 24 2009

This review is from: Meditations on Violence: A Comparison of Martial Arts Training & Real World Violence (Paperback)
Rory Miller's Meditations on Violence forces you to wipe the sleep from your eyes and wake up to the reality of violence. He doesn't pull any punches and approaches the subject with a matter-of-factness that is refreshing. There is no mysticism. There is no fantasy. Miller presents the grim reality and forces you to think on it. There is no miracle art for dealing with violence. His emphasis is on the need for practical training based on the results of scientific studies, and promises nothing more than hopefully adding a few percentage points to your chances.

He criticizes the fantasy world of most dojo centric training, and pushes escaping from the self-limiting mindset that most people possess when it comes to acting and reacting to violent situations.

He urges the reader to be critical of everything, including his own material, and to not swallow ideas and concepts whole. His relatively humble stance on the subject, in addition to his significant experience is presented throughout the book.

This is a book about violence, what leads up to it, and most importantly how to take your cues and avoid it if at all possible. But this is a book ABOUT violence, and contains some graphic descriptions which might be unsettling to some. Miller's experience as a jail guard has exposed him to some of the most violent and disturbing individuals society has captured. The stories he relates emphasize and illustrate this point.

A must read for anyone who wants a reality check on violence and a way to evaluate their own training methods in light of this.

5.0 out of 5 stars A necessary reading for all martial artists, Nov 2 2010
By
This review is from: Meditations on Violence: A Comparison of Martial Arts Training & Real World Violence (Paperback)
This book opens a new world unknown to any martial artist that has been training in the Dojo all of his life, but has never had to use it. It has a no non-sense approach to violence and a reality check that is unsettling at time, but I guess it is the purpose of the writing style.

It also has a very nice analysis on training methods. On how to take some of the risk away in training, and still keep it relevant.

Any style you practice, if you ever had a claim about self-defense, you need to know this material, it is a must.
