Timely Resonance with the Latest Swine Flu Outbreak,
By Donald Mitchell "Jesus Loves You!" (Thanks for Providing My Reviews over 112,000 Helpful Votes Globally) - See all my reviews (TOP 10 REVIEWER) (#1 HALL OF FAME)
This review is from: Medusa (Hardcover)
"While the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the anger of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD struck the people with a very severe plague." -- Numbers 11:33Medusa is more of a thinking person's suspense story than a classic Clive Cussler thriller. It starts out at a far higher level for adventure, excitement, and thrills than is sustained for the bulk of the book. I thought the opening was a five-star effort and most of the rest was three stars for moving too slowly and not being interesting enough. If you like to think about the potential of biotechnology based on the oceans to sustain life on land, Medusa is filled with colorful conjectures that can provide much musing pleasure. If that thread isn't of much interest to you, this will be a three-star book for you. The book has more cardboard characters in it than Carter has little liver pills. They don't serve much purpose . . . but to pad out the book. If you edited the book down to make it a fun thriller, it would probably be less than 200 pages. But if you have a long beach day ahead and only want to carry one book with you, Medusa would make a decent choice for relaxing reading. The overall theme of the story is how to avoid fast-mutating pandemics that spread through water as well as by human contact. If you think about the risk involved, you'll worry more about viruses in the future than terrorists. Watch out!

Another Kurt Austin success,
By
This review is from: Medusa (Hardcover)
As is typical in Cussler novels, the heroes are slightly superhuman but still very likeable. This is the latest appearance of former CIA officer now NUMA engineer Kurt Austin. Cussler continues to drive international intrigue but with greater dimensionality than in some earlier novels where countries, like people have both dark and light sides. The root of the story lies in the development of medical technologies based on life in the seas, a light stretch from the same topic of medicines rooted in life in the rain forests. There is the megalomaniacal bad guy(s), the involved beautiful and brilliant doctor under threat and the NUMA team treading where NUMA shouldn't really be but always is.Cussler is wonderful because he writes in a fast style that moves along, and doesn't dive so deep into his supporting subject matter to invoke somnolence. It's brilliant escapist fun and Cussler fans will definitely enjoy the story.
