I HATE THIS BOOK! Nov 17 2004
Format:Paperback
I'm a grad of Full Sail with a Computer Animation Degree and a Digital Media degree and this is the worst book I've seen yet out there. When I first cracked open the book I paid $50 bucks for, I was really excited. Now I'm so mad I could spit fire!

In the book is a really promising tutorial for creating grass but when you type in some of the code in the script editor, it comes up as a sytax error.....every time!

Then I go to the CD thinking I must have made a mistake typing....nope. The syntax on the CD doesn't even work!

I would love to play around with the script but when the script doesn't even work in the first place, its makes it a little hard to pull it apart and see what makes it tick.

I get no responces from the e-mail I found online for David Stripinis. And then I see Mark Wilkins and Chris Kazmier giving it 'rave' reviews makes me not want to buy their books either. Charles River Media dropped the ball big time on this release.

If Mark or Chris sees this you need to tell your buddy to put out an update for his cd...mainly the grass tut. Till then I'm telling all my instructors at school and other students to avoid all your books.

How did the editor of this book keep his job? Feb 8 2005
By Brendon
Format:Paperback
While this book was VERY hard to follow ( I'm a pretty technical guy when it comes to 3D) i WAS able to follow it most of the time. What really pisses me off is that it is a programming book and just about every page has a syntax error of some kind or another. Really mad about the fact that just as you think you're getting it there's a not always so obvious syntax error that the author and the editor and the publisher all missed!I spent more time troubleshooting the authors oversights then i did learning anything - WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? nobody buy this book until they fix all their little screw ups.

An excellent place to go for intermediate MEL scripting... Nov 23 2003
Format:Paperback
This book is not for beginners. However, if you've learned the basics of MEL scripting and are looking for a good place to learn about more complex scripting techniques, this is a great place to start. I feel that this book is complementary to "MEL Scripting for Maya Animators" (which, in the interest of full disclosure, I helped write) in that it's a great book to jump into once you have a strong command of the basics.
