Love it hate it Oct. 22 2006

When my daughter asked for a doll crib for her 7th year birthday, I spent a lot of time researching. After reading all the reviews, I decided to buy this one for the fact that it looks pretty and it is made of solid wood. I wanted something that last. However, when I opened the package, I was very surprised to find out that there are scratched paint on one piece, and cracks on two other pieces. I was reluctant to accept it initially. However, I did not want to dissapoint my daughter. I still assembled it. Although the instruction said "Assembly in minutes", it turned out to be very difficult for one side. I am not a pro but avergae in my assembly skill, and I did even out all sides before tightening. It was clear to me that this is due to the impefection of the product rather than the assembler. Once assembled, it does look very pretty as expected. I just feel that I paid dearly for a not too perfect product. Is it just bad luck or some indication of the product quality? The product was packaged very nicely, so the defects are unlikely due to the shipment. I'd rate the design as 5 stars, the quality as 2 stars. Since the price is relatively high, overall is 3 stars.

Sturdy and Pretty Jan. 18 2011

Verified Purchase Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
I purchased this crib for my 2 1/2 year old daughter. She has a twin brother and I was concerned that he might break whatever I bought. I was very torn between this crib and the Guidecraft cradle - which I'd seen in person and while it was very sturdy and well made, it seemed smaller and looked like a coffin to me (although decorative paint could go a long way in solving that problem) but ultimately, I preferred the white color and size of the Melissa and Doug product. I was not disappointed when it arrived. Although it took me about 40 mins to assemble and I did have to re-drill 2 holes to get the side rail to properly line up, I did feel that the crib was well made and very sturdy. It even supported the twin brother's weight (about 36 pounds) in the crib. The only weakness that I found was that when the cradle was turned on its side and the twin brother jumped on it - the side rail split. I'm honestly not surprised that it broke - nor would I think it was designed to withstand that kind of play. However, I called Melissa and Doug customer service and spoke to a friendly representative in Connecticut and a new side rail is going to be shipped to us - free of charge. Unfortunately I'll have put the crib away until twin brother can be trusted.

UPDATE:
I received the new side rail from Melissa and Doug, but since the item is handcrafted the replacement was not exactly the same length and therefore the crib didn't fit well. I called the company again and they are sending me a brand new replacement for the entire crib. They are very customer service oriented.

You can't go wrong with Melissa and Doug! Another great purchase! Dec 9 2013

I just finished assembling this crib. It says "Assembles in Minutes". What it means is "Assembles in Quite a Few Minutes". :) With that said the assembly is not at all difficult, and once I got a better understanding of how it all went together things went much more quickly.
I love Melissa and Doug products which is why I chose to buy this crib over all of the other cribs on the market. Generally if Melissa and Doug makes an item I will purchase their product since quality and design are always a sure thing. This crib does not disappoint. It is beautiful and well-made. It also feels like a good-sized crib because of the scrolling handles on the sides. Another thing that influenced my purchase of this crib was that it sits higher off the ground compared to many of the other cradles/cribs out there. I didn't like the idea of my girls having to be on their knees to put the baby in the bed. On top of that, I feel that a cradle/crib that sits very low to the floor encourages little children to step in it and possibly break through the bottom. I know a few little children in my house who would do exactly that! :)

With that said I can not say enough about how impressed I was by the intelligent decision of the Melissa and Doug designers to NOT put a bottom piece in this crib! Meaning there is not a bottom piece that attaches to the crib frame. Way to go, Melissa and Doug! They truly understand how children think and play! I was worried that if the crib had a bottom piece or "floor" that it would end up getting broken should one of my children decide to try to climb in themselves. The bottom of the crib is attached to the crib mattress. Once you assemble the crib, the mattress is placed on top of the crib frame. The mattress is hard on the bottom, thereby creating the bottom/floor of the crib, and soft on the top for the baby to sleep on. The entire mattress is covered in the purple material that you see in the pictures. Great idea!

The material that the bedding is made of is not great quality. It is thin, but it is cute. Little girls won't know the difference, and I was happy that the crib came with bedding!

I think that Melissa and Doug could have done a better job of explaining that this crib DOES rock back and forth, so it is actually a cradle. I read a lot about this crib on various websites before finally purchasing it, and I could not get a clear idea of whether or not it actually had rockers on the bottom--you simply can't tell by the pictures, and amazingly enough they don't really say that it rocks in their description. I wanted a rocking crib/cradle, and I was very happy to find that this is indeed a rocking crib/cradle! I think it would benefit Melissa and Doug if they would make that clear in their description or photos. It is another nice feature that this item does look like a crib while functioning as a cradle. I think that will encourage little girls to play with it for a much longer period of time since they will still feel as though it is appropriate for their babies after they move on from the infant baby doll stage to the older babies (of the toddler+ age).

This is a nice-sized, well-made, good-looking toy/piece of furniture, and it is definitely a great buy! After my girls outgrow this crib, I will be storing it away to give to their children one day. It is a piece that should stand the test of time as long as it is used properly.

My one complaint, which is kind of a big one but not big enough to overshadow the quality construction and great design, is that the heads of the screws do show on the outside of the crib just as you see in the picture. I was hoping that there would be some white-colored filler pieces to put over those holes because I had seen a picture of the crib on another website without the screw holes showing. That must have been a doctored photo though. I wish the screw holes didn't show or were able to be covered, but again that won't bother my excited girls one bit on Christmas morning!

Another home run for Melissa and Doug (with a bit of a stumble coming across home plate with those screw heads showing :)P)! I love the way that every little detail seems to be thought about when they make their items. They truly make quality, heirloom-worthy pieces, and they certainly understand how children think and play! I can't wait until Christmas morning!

(As a side note I also bought the Melissa and Doug doll highchair over other brands on the market. I haven't assembled that yet, but after doing the research I thought it was the best value, quality, size, and look on the market. I am just waiting to once again be impressed when I assemble it!)

Difficult Assembly Dec 15 2012

This seemingly simple toy was maddeningly difficult to assemble. If you can find one at your local toy store pre-assembled, it's worth your money. If Santa's bringing this for Christmas, his elves will need lots of time, patience and strong eggnog.

Poor Craftsmanship Dec 18 2012

I have been purchasing Melissa & Doug products for my daughter for the past two years. The quality and the craftsmanship has always been excellent, up until now!

The Crib had several cracks in numerous parts, several chips and debris that were just painted over.. Upon assembly, several screws & nuts were not the correct size. I sent an email to the Company today expressing my displeasure. In the future I will strongly reconsider purchasing this Company's products but as far as the crib is concerned DO NOT BUY IT!!!
