To watch Live... and Alone is to realize that few performers connect with their audience as closely, and inspire such mutual gratitude, as Melissa Etheridge. Performing a two-hour, 22-song set at Hollywood's Kodak Theater on December 8, 2001 (the final American date of an international solo tour), Etheridge moves effortlessly between beautiful ballads ("Ready to Love" and Joan Armatrading's "The Weakness in Me") and raw, aching expressions of passion ("Lover Please," "I'm the Only One," and others) that have chronicled her own survival in a lifetime's quest for love. She may be alone on stage, but offstage life looks sweet between the 40-year-old Etheridge and Tammy, her first girlfriend after breaking up with longtime lover Julie Cypher, the mother of their two children. Etheridge's sensitivity to all facets of love is undiminished, whether she's dazzling her mostly female audience with flawless vocals and expert playing of several guitars, or giving a tearfully maternal response to questions about the mid-tour terrorism of September 11. Loaded with behind-the-scenes features (including rare video of a 1987 club gig), this two-disc set is heaven-sent for Etheridge's loyal fans, offering a thorough and technically impressive survey of Etheridge's career thus far. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars This woman can captivate an audience..., Mar 1 2004

I must first admit that I bought this DVD more for my wife than for me. She's been quite patient with all my purchases of live performances.

With that said, I absolutely loved Melissa's performance. One voice, one guitar and I was hooked. Melissa commands the stage and connects with the audience, at the same time. Not too many artists can successfully do that.

It's a phenomenal performance that is uplifting and emotional. She is a superb song writer and performer. You won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's about time!, Feb 25 2004

This review is from: Melissa Etheridge: Live... and Alone (DVD)
It's taken years for Melissa Etheridge to put together anything on video or DVD. This was worth the wait.

The performance itself shows off the incredible talent this woman has to pull off live shows.. and to do it on her own, no less. There is nothing worse than plunking down hard earned cash to see a concert only to have the "artist" squawk their way through it, looking lost and pathetic because their "talent" was all manufactured in a studio. Melissa Etheridge is NOT that type of performer. She's got perfect rhythm, a tireless voice and endless emotion. She is engaging and funny, and she will pull you into her energy.

The extras on this DVD are also fantastic. The various moments with Melissa on the road is a LOT of fun. I have watched this several times and never tire of it. One of the bonus songs, "Alive" is not available in any other format which is too bad because it's a GREAT song. However, it's just another reason to pick up this DVD.

Some "concert videos" can be downright boring, but this one really delivers. Obviously, much time was taken to put it together, and it's worth every penny. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing,Amazing, Did I already say amazing?, Jan 29 2004

Being the huge Melissa Etheridge fan that I am, I would be one of the toughest critics. There's nothing bad I can say about this though. It shows Melissa at her best. Kicking some serious booty on every song she plays, even when she plays the piano. It's really easy to just pop it in your DVD player and get your guitar out and play along(that's what I do). Hats off to you Melissa for this outstanding video and of course, for all you've given to the gay and lesbian world. Once again, this is a must have for all Melissa Etheridge fans!!!
