How wonderful to have all these songs on one CD,
By
This review is from: Memories of You (Audio CD)
This CD takes standards that Bette Midler has recorded over the years, and put them together in one collection. Bette's unique vocal stylings make each song her own, even though we've all heard these songs many times before, sung by the world's most famous and celebrated voices. It was an inspired idea to cull the best of Bette's recordings from the American Songbook and create a single CD. It has become a favourite mainstay of my music collection and I heartily recommend it to any serious Bette Midler fan.

Balladeer Bette,

Rhino/Atlantic knew well enough not to release this " new " compilation from Bette's old catalog in the US, and aimed it at the UK/European market. Most likely Bette had approval , and it's even thinly disguised with a current photo. Bette Midler does not do a politically correct concert, nor jokes, but why she continues to tone down the recording side of her career flys in the face of all that she's down in that multi-faceted career since 1972. Yet another masking of her recording career, distilling it down to ballads and schmaltz to represent the serious , sensitive side of her. She needs to put out...the live stuff, the unreleased songs, the songs she only did on TV or in concert, The Rose outtakes, the Jinxed Theme, a box set of her career. She may now be in her 60's, but she's never been a bore, nor timid of belting out R&B, rock and bawdy jokes, so why she continues to rewrite her own recording history as an adult easy listening artist only is akin to seeing a Bette concert of her doing only these nostalgic songs, and she's never done that. She needs to do a soul/R&B/rock album, and not all remakes either. You won't fall asleep at a Bette concert, but you will listening to a whole album of this stuff.

Deceptive market.,

I am extremely disappointed with this CD.The 65 year-old singer went on the usual talk-show circuit in UK promoting this "new" festive album. In the liner notes to "Memories", she described the songs as "lovely, graceful, and in retrospect, compact little poems of a time when music had simpler, but very sincere expressions, of emotion and love. There wasn't a lot of irony going on; no one had the time or the money". But this is NOT a new CD. Apparently in UK, where the album was first cleverly released, the bathhouse diva's discography is not everybody's talk. And all that may mislead the buyer. In fact, it is a collection of songs released time ago, taken from her old albums and put together in a new packaging. Rhino has done this job and call it a "brand-new" CD. I don't know who to be more upset with -- the maturing former brash'n'brassy star for promoting something totally inaccurate, Rhino for marketing something inaccurate, or Amazon for selling it! My advice to people considering buying anything on Amazon and other sites is to read the reviews first before buying as I should have done. 17 of 24 people found the following review helpful

Memories...,

Memories Of You is a collection of songs as remebered by Bette Midler in more recent years. Most of the selections are standards and classics. From obscure Johnny Mercer songs like Drinking Again from Bette's 2nd LP in 1973 to What Are You Doing New Year's Eve from her last Cool Yule cd from 2006. Most of the selection were some of Bette's best from For The Boys like For All We Know to PS I Love You.There is also inclusions from her Rosemary Clooney & Peggy Lee Sonbook cd's, including the Barnes & Noble exclusive rare track, He Needs Me. She even included the live One For My Baby track recorded on Johnny Carson's last episode that won her an Emmy Award. Some of the songs were edited but also sound remastered and better than on their original discs. I wish she included some more rare tracks like Somewhere Along The Way. This is a great collection for those who want a memorable evening with a loved one and fire place roaring in the background! |
