From Amazon.com

"Many years from now" must have seemed like an understatement to 16-year-old Paul McCartney, wondering if he'd still be needed or fed at the age of 64. As it turned out, all doubt as to the latter had ceased by his 22nd birthday (though few could have predicted he'd end up washing down those meals with the liquid pride of Seattle). As to the former? Now that McCartney, as of the date of this album's release, has reached that mythic age, his greatest work is 40 years behind him, his solo peak over 30 years gone. Does the world need a new Paul McCartney album? The answer is yes, at least as much as it needs anything else that passes for music these days. With Memory Almost Full, Macca is back. No, it's not Ram or Band on the Run. It might not even be Flowers in the Dirt--in 1989, he had a full band, the support of Linda, and Elvis Costello as a collaborator. Here, he's on his own. Literally: on the majority of the tracks, everything but the strings is multi-instrumentalist Paul. But the surprise is that it's one of his freest, loosest affairs in years, sonically reminiscent of the Tug of War/Pipes of Peace era with nods to Abbey Road in the album-closing medley, McCartney's gravelly tones on "Gratitude," and 2007's version of "Her Majesty," the palate-cleansing "Nod Your Head." It's a surprise because of the album's inescapable sense of retrospection ("Ever Present Past," "Vintage Clothes," "That Was Me") and even a bit of weariness. The next-to-last song is "The End of the End," after all, in which McCartney tells us about what he'd like to happen "on the day that I die." (He wants "songs that were sung/to be hung out like blankets/that lovers have played on/and laid on while listening to songs that were sung," and will likely get his wish.) But it never gets overwhelming, for McCartney mostly resists his tendency to get plodding and maudlin. In fact, Memory Almost Full must be the most sanguine album made during the dissolution of a marriage since...well, ever. "What went out is coming back," he sings in "Vintage Clothes," and from the sound of things, that may not be just wishful thinking. What's past is prologue; if we're lucky, what to come may be McCartney's late renaissance. --Benjamin Lukoff

4.0étoiles sur 5 Almost full, but not quite!, Jui 1 2008
Par Paul U. (Ontario, Canada) - Voir tous mes commentaires
Paul McCartney's previous CD, the (in my opinion) excellent "Chaos and Creation", was ethereal , inward-looking, melodic and at times melancholic, perhaps accurately reflecting his feelings during the deterioration of his doomed second marriage. With "Memory Almost Full", McCartney is back on solid ground. These songs are more rhythmic, varied, nostalgic and at times humorous. The 'suite' which covers five songs from "Vintage Clothes" to "The End of the End" is a sonic montage, providing snapshots of Paul's life from childhood to the imagined "end of the end". My favorite songs in "Memory Almost Full" are the dreamlike ballad "You Tell Me" and the melodramatic stadium-rocker "House of Wax". But, overall, it's the Beatles-like versatility of this collection which has its greatest appeal for me. Based on his last two albums, a revitalized McCartney seems to have caught his creative second (or third) wind. Perhaps we can expect Paul to take us an even "much better place"? in his next offering?

4.0étoiles sur 5 Paul McCartney & Wings? Nope, but sure sounds like it!, Mars 3 2008

Always the king of writing a good catchy pop/rock song, I think many feared he was losing that ability in recent years. Luckily "Memory Almost Full" is packed with catchy energetic songs that will puzzle you by how Beatles and Wings sounding these songs are! Opening with the commercially successful single "Dance Tonight", "Ever Present Past" follows it up extremely well, VERY catchy song with Paul's vocals in top form. Track four, "Only Mama Knows" is evidence that Paul can still rock out even in his 60's. "Mr. Bellamy" is another favorite. Hard to describe this one, just a solid, unique and hooky song. Probably my two favorite tracks off the album, "Vintage Clothes" and "That Was Me" fall in at tracks 8 & 9. Both are near pop perfection, very catchy uplifting songs. The next 3 songs are strong as well (in particular track 10 "Feet in the Clouds" which is another fave) but the closure to the album "Nod Your Head" just makes "Memory Almost Full" complete for me. You haven't heard nothing if you thought he was rocking at full flight prior to this one! On "Nod Your Head" McCartney just gives it all he's got in that lovely voice of his, literally yelling the words out! "Memory Almost Full" is a true treat not to be missed in his catalog. Pick this one up if your a Beatles fan, Wings fan, or just a casual listener looking for an awesome 13 songs!
