Wonderful and Incredible, May 1 2009
Living within the confines of Temple Huacho, Jubilee and her brother Jolly are safe from the Silver, a mysterious substance that rises from the land every night and destroys or remakes everything in its path. Where a building once stood, a gate made of lapis lazuli might take its place. Or perhaps it stretches its silver form across a road, leaving grass where cobblestone once lay.
No one is really sure what the Silver is. The old timers say that it is the breath of the Goddess's creation. Some say that it is the spirit of the Goddess; come to wander her lands at night. Everyone is sure of one thing. Don't let yourself be touched by the Silver. It kills everything that lives.
One terrible night, Jubilee releases the Silver deep beneath the castle. The Silver creeps up the walls of the Temple, dissolves the window and snatches Jolly from her. With her brother dead and gone, Jubilee grows into a solemn youth.. Then things take a turn for the worse.
When a mysterious stranger approaches Jubilee with the news that her brother may be alive, her world is thrown into overdrive. On a wave of self discovery, Jubilee discovers that she may not be what she seems. Memories are popping up out of the darkness and she does not know what to make of them. She flees her homeland in search of answers, going on a quest to find herself and find answers.
The Dark Stranger is stalking her and Jubilee learns that her brother, alive and well, may be the catalyst for the destruction of everything she holds dear.
Nagata has woven a wonderful web for us to lose ourselves in. Though hard science fiction, I found that "Memory" had elements of fantasy thrown in for good measure. We are in capable hands here. Nagata keeps her world believable and the science within "Memory" understandable. A novice to science fiction would love this novel, as would a seasoned science fiction reader. Everyone can be pleased within the pages of this novel.
What I found refreshing about "Memory" was its characters. Jubilee changes through out the book, learning more about herself as she progresses on her journey. She develops as a human being, as a woman and as a fighter. There are no cutout characters here. The characters stay in your head long after the book has been finished. They become a part of your life, they are so believable.
I'm not usually a fan of science fiction - its scientific edge often leaves me cold because it is so dry and boring. Not so with "Memory". There is something for everyone: secrets, quests, adventure, loads of science and incredible characters. It's a wonderful novel of one woman's self-discovery and growth. It's a novel about family. It's also an amazing read. Whether or not you like science fiction, you will love "Memory". Like the Silver, it will catch a hold of you and not let go until the very end.

powerful insightful coming of age science fiction thriller, May 17 2003
Ten year old Jubilee lives with her parents and her brother Jolly in the remote outpost Temple Huacho located in the isolated wild of Kavasphir Hills, a place known for the frequency of the killing silver floods that terraforms the landscape with each new deluge. The family "owns" metabolic machines to keep them safe from the deadly quick flow of the silver. However, that fails when the silver claims Jolly while his younger sister watches in abject horror.
Several years later, a mysterious stranger seemingly walks out of the silver up to a teenage Jubilee asking for Jolly. Beside the awe of seeing what this man did, her fear of him makes her flee, but also wonder if her sibling lives. Needing to know, Jubilee plans to go on a quest to find her brother and learn the secrets of the silver accompanied by her Uncle Liam.
MEMORY is a powerful insightful coming of age science fiction thriller starring a wonderful protagonist seeking answers, but what she learns makes her wonder about a whole different set of personal questions rather than what she originally sought to understand. The story line is action packed yet contains a subtle theme of finding one's self to comprehend the world in which an individual resides. Though the silver remains ironically a somewhat unsolved puzzle, the reader will have a great time observing the brave heroine on her journey to ascertain the truth that takes her as much inside her self as the weird world she lives in.
