5.0 out of 5 stars A great Jose, Mar 4 2001
This review is from: Memphis Menu (Audio CD)
This is undoubtedly one of Jose' Feliciano's best albums of the post-Jarrard period, with a wonderful fusion of Country and 1970s American Rock sound. Co-produced by Steve Cropper and by Jose' himself, this album suffered from not being properly promoted by RCA, a label that in those years concentrated more on hits collections than in the promotion of many great early 70s albums such as this one. The whole album is good (it even sounds good in my car); among my favorites are "Lay Lady Lay" by Dylan, "Magnolia", "One More Mile" and Jose's splendid song "Where is My Woman". This album should be part of every fan's collection; I strongly recommend this CD produced by the Edsen/Demon Records label, which is a faithful reissue of the original and which contains the complete credits, the lyrics to all the songs and even a review of the album. We can only hope that this initiative will spur other labels and particularly RCA/BMG into re-releasing all of Jose's wonderful albums from that era, on CD and with adequate promotion.

4.0 out of 5 stars At long last!, Oct 11 2000

After searching for years and years for a copy of Jose's cover of JJ Cale's incredibly beautiful rapture-"Magnolia", here it is and it was worth the wait! No one haunts you with his "oh darlin" or "oh baby" in only the way Jose can. It's haunted me for years and now I can exhale and enjoy the beauty of it all. The rest of the album is good. "It Doesn't Matter" is lovely. But if just for "Magnolia" it's worth the price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Jose Feliciano at his unusual best!, Aug 16 2000

Yeah, yeah. Some folks laugh. And Joes was kinda lampooned in "Fargo." Besides "Light My Fire," and "Feliz Navidad," and the dorky Top 40 tunes we all know by heart, Jose released this album in about 1972. Can't recall for sure. However, I've looked far and wide for this in CD format. This import is worth the ~$20. His version of "Magnolia" is haunting. My favorite cut is "River Song." I don't know who wrote the song and as far as I know it has never been covered, but if you love a good love lost song, this is among the all time bests. If you are a Feliciano affectionado, this CD is a MUST for your collection. It was a bold departure from his traditional style, the musicians on the album are superb and it is, quite simply, hauntingly beautiful. His cover of Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay" is incredible. This album, I believe, is about as "hip" as Jose ever got. He's a great talent, and this rare find showcases a side of Feliciano of which most are totally unaware. At its release it was largely ignored by the "Rolling Stone" press -- even though many of the musicians on the album have done remarkable studio work for many, many others. You cannot go wrong with this album. I am glad I finally found it on CD format.
