Additional Features

Men in Black is one movie that has been issued in so many different DVD editions it's hard to keep them straight. The latest version is the Superbit edition, which, like other DVDs in the Superbit series, offers subtle visual and audio improvements over the version of the movie included on other DVDs. The anamorphic picture in the Superbit version is cleaner than that of the anamorphic track offered in other DVDs of this movie, though in all versions occasional grain is visible in shots of the sky. Overall, though, the picture is quite impressive with its deep, rich blacks and saturated colors. The additional DTS soundtrack on the Superbit version is very similar to the Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks issued on this and other editions of the movie, though slightly more balanced throughout.

Fans of Men in Black have a variety of editions to choose from. This is the version for video- and audiophiles who don't mind the lack of extra goodies. --Eugene Wei

Amazon.com Essential Video

This imaginative summer comedy from director Barry Sonnenfeld (Get Shorty) is a lot of fun, largely on the strength of Will Smith's engaging performance as the rookie partner of a secret agent (Tommy Lee Jones) assigned to keep tabs on Earth-dwelling extraterrestrials. There's lots of comedy to spare in this bright film, some of the funniest stuff found in the margins of the major action. (A scene with Smith's character being trounced in the distance by a huge alien while Jones questions a witness is a riot.) The inventiveness never lets up, and the cast--including Vincent D'Onofrio doing frighteningly convincing work as an alien occupying a decaying human--hold up their end splendidly. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!, April 26 2011
This review is from: Men in Black [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
The 1080p HD transfer is pretty good with a bit of jitter, most noticeable during the opening credits where the text wiggles around a bit. Besides this, it's a fine transfer for a slightly older film.

It contains all the DVD special features, some of which have been reworked to use Blu-ray technology, as well as new special features that are just for the Blu release... most of which are just games that I don't really care for.

But alas, I bought the movie for the movie, and it's a great movie presented very well.

People go through life oblivious to the reality around them. As pointed out in this movie, at one time everyone knew the world was flat; and now everyone knows we are alone in the universe. But what if we are wrong? Who will protect us? "Men in black used to be the term for the bad guys. This movie shows they are our last line of defense. This is a fun movie and there are many great actors to add to the fun.

Every one is so busy watching Tommy Lee Jones make his stoic looks and Will making one-liners that they miss the person that hold it all together. In addition, that person has to do act throughout the movie in an Edgar suit. Have you ever tried one on? Vincent D'Onofrio has to look unnatural and act natural. This was one movie where I felt sorry for the bug. He even drops his snack (Linda Fiorentino) near the end. It just shows that bugs lead a hard life.

If you are into recent bug movies, look for "Out There" where they mention bugs in a rug

Hadn't seen this one in ages, and forgot how funny it is, essentially a spoof of others in the genre -- essentially a distant cousin of Ghostbusters in that respect.

Note this is an "economy-model" version of the DVD, single disk only. While the menu lists "Making MIB" and "Meet MIB", both prompt you to insert Disk 2, not included. The disk included is clearly marked "Disk 1", obviously taken from a 2-disk set.

It does include commentary, but that's set up a little confusingly. If you play with commentary on, there's a prominent notice which remains on screen to reset your player to 4x3 for proper viewing, and I haven't (yet) figured out how to make that go away. There's separate on/off for audio and video commentary, and possibly it's a matter of coming up with the right combo of those(audio on, video off?).
