5.0 out of 5 stars Five stars for PERFORMANCE, not compositions, Oct 5 2011

This review is from: Mendelssohn-Bartholdy: Concertos for piano & violin (Audio CD)
As stated in the title, my five star rating is not for the quality of the pieces themselves, but rather for the performance. The playing of Bezuidenhout and Von der Goltz, in collaboration with the Freiburger Barockorchester, on this disc is in tune, clean, emotional, and carefully thought out. Harmonia Mundi is usually a good choice for period performance, especially for cleanliness and technical proficiency. For me, excellent technical execution is a prerequisite for any classical performance, ESPECIALLY intonation, so Harmonia Mundi is the perfect classical music label.

Historically, this record is an interesting piece to add to any classical music lover's collection. These are both very early pieces of Mendelssohn, and it is very fascinating to me to compare these pieces with his more mature works. I will reserve most of my opinions about the pieces, because I figure most people would not buy a CD without knowing the pieces on them and deciding that, for quality of music or performance, it is worth purchasing. I will only say that, to me, these pieces are very basic, repetitive, and usually lack nuance. But it is certainly music worth exploring. All music deserves a chance :)

In short: clean, musical (essentially great) performance; you be the judge of the music. If you are fascinated with period performance, this is a great disc to have.

Happy listening!

5.0 out of 5 stars PIECES DE JEUNESSE, Oct 18 2011
By PVP "Markala" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Mendelssohn-Bartholdy: Concertos for piano & violin (Audio CD)

The CD arrived in a good shape on an external point of view, but I have not listened it yet.
