4.0 out of 5 stars Filling a vacuum, Oct 31 2000

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Mentoring in Religious Education (Paperback)
Mentoring in Religious Education fills a vacuum in the discipline of religious education by addressing the currently popular issue of mentoring. Other books speak to the issue of being a spiritual mentor or guide to others; this book speaks more specifically to the issue of mentoring the religious educator. Though perhaps directed more to the professional, Ms. English also recognizes that many practicing religious educators are lay volunteers.

Mentoring is widely used in business, education, and government for induction and advancement in a career. Little has been done to extend this helpful practice to ministry, including religious education.

Grounded solidly in the research literature on mentoring in these other professions, the book helpfully also connects the reader with practices akin to what is now called mentoring in the various streams within religious tradition (i.e., primarily Christianity).

Guidelines and tools for developing a mentoring program within a religious education organization are extensively developed within the book, including: recruiting, selecting, and matching mentors and mentees; orientation; compensation; maintenance of the relationship; and evaluating the program.

Extensive footnotes provide citations for readers wishing to delve into original research; subject and name indexes provide additional helps for the reader. The absence of a bibliography is a curious, if not particularly serious, omission for a work of such high standing.

This is not the book for persons looking for an inspirational book on mentoring. The writing style is academic, and may be found by some readers to be a bit laborious. However, it is a substantive and helpful contribution to religious education, and an appropriate application of mentoring principles to this discipline. For this niche, Mentoring in Religious Education is the only book of its kind.
