Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Fans of the play will find this an intriguing adaptation. Hinds sets his version in modern dress and dramatically edits the text to the basics while keeping the Shakespearean flavor of the dialogue (increasingly as the book goes on). The coloring in shades of slate blue and pale gray gives it an antique patina that's counterbalanced by the way Hinds leaves construction lines visible. That makes it feel like reading someone's unpolished sketchbook, as though the characters were observed, not created. It's always a benefit to see Shakespeare acted out, to make the universal situations clear to the modern viewer, and that benefit extends to the graphic medium, especially when the characters have a sense of motion, as here. Some aspects of the original are still discomforting; Hinds is faithful to the play in its treatment of the bloodthirsty, money-hungry Shylock, and some readers may be put off by the inclusion of lines such as "you may be pleased to collect whatever usurious interest pleases your Jew heart." An author's note encourages further research on that matter and clarifies some of Hinds's creative decisions. (May)

Product Description

With elegant, contemporary artwork and a faithful but succinct adaptation, this graphic novel casts a classic drama in a provocative new light.

Here is the tale of young Bassanio, who, to win the love of fair Portia, entangles his dearest friend, Antonio, in a dangerous bargain with the moneylender Shylock. Only Bassanio’s heartfelt efforts — and a clever intervention by Portia — will save Antonio from paying Shylock "a pound of flesh." Moody and mesmerizing, this graphic novel adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s more controversial plays boasts a chic modern cast, high drama, and all the dark, familiar beauty of Venice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Adaptation, Sep 7 2008
By tvtv3 "tvtv3" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Merchant of Venice (Paperback)
In this graphic novel version of Shakespeare's THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, the key points of the novel have been condensed into a more linear storyline. The core characters, key plot points, and most famous pieces of dialogue remain in tact. The illustrations have updated the setting of the story to a more modern period than the period in which Shakespeare originally set the play. I really enjoyed the illustration and color scheme of Hinds' version. The grey color pattern and rough and sometimes jagged illustrations embody the overall tone and mood of the play very well. Shakespeare purists will probably hate this book because it does cut out a few secondary plot points and a great amount of dialogue. However, I really enjoyed the book and found Hinds' version of THE MERCHANT OF VENICE to be a great example of adapting a complex Shakespearean work into the format of a contemporary graphic novel. Recommended for English teachers and anyone else interested in seeing Shakespeare's play adapted into a different format.

4.0 out of 5 stars Artwork 9/10 very edgy yet antique and just right for the play, Jun 17 2008
By redeyesfromreading "redeye" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Merchant of Venice (Hardcover)
In my quest to cover my Shakespeare 'tasks' with minimum pain, this had to be on the list. I liked the artwork - a lot. The colours I found matched the mood and tone of the play. I'd toyed with other versions before plumping for this one, with art I guess it's all down to personal taste. Seems to be quite a chunk of the play 'missing', probably because its one very long play. I'll still need to buy another book to fill in the gaps. But other than that, if you are 'doing' the play, go for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of Hinds' 'Merchant of Venice', Jun 20 2010
By Ryan S. Mease "scott.godwin" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Merchant of Venice (Paperback)
This was a great adaption of the original Shakespeare. It uses nearly direct quotations, with some modified text for comprehension. The best part of this edition is certainly the artwork -- I love this man's style! One odd aspect of the work is the editor's decision to place the author's note 'after' the adaption. Here, Hinds explain some important aspects of his adaption; this would have been helpful beforehand.
