I bought this box set in Toronto more than ten years ago and it's one of my all-time favorites. It reads like a who's who of jazz vocalists: Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, Helen Merrill and Shirley Horn among others. It could be viewed as an education in how standards should be sung and played. But it's far too enjoyable to be thought of that way. In particular I love the fourth disc "Just One of Those 'Live' Things." It features a wide range of live performances where you can really hear the band and the vocalist improvising. It wasn't available in the US for a long time and I'm so pleased it's here now.

This has got to be the greatest collection of jazz standards ever compiled. Sung by the best. It's really an education in jazz music. Highly recommended for those learning to play the standards, and for those who can actually remember the day...

Four discs full of jazz classics (no instrumentals). You can't go wrong here. Good for people like myself who aren't jazz experts. Includes my personal fave, "Lover Man (Oh Where Can You Be?).
