«Merkinball» is a double track single released as a companion to Neil Young's album «Mirrorball», recorded in a couple of days in February 1995 with Pearl Jam. Eddie Vedder, author of the lyrics and musics of both songs, had the cooperation of the band's bassist Jeff Ament, long time producer Brendan O'Brien and, of course, Neil Young, to release the single.
As for the songs, both are tremendous in every single way and seriously under-rated.
«I Got ID» (also known as «I Got Sh*t») is a very emotional and strong song, much to the style of Eddie Vedder in Pearl Jam's earlier years. Ed's raw and angry voice contrasts with beautiful lyrics and music, producing an amazing and inspiring song. I really lack words to describe this song and to be very honest, it's one of the best and deepest songs I have ever heard and I don't say this any often, so you can see how I feel about this song.
«Long Road» is not as under-rated as «I Got ID», but still is very unknown for the 'common audience'. This is also a truly amazing song and I cannot pick which of the two is best.A very intimate, calm and beautiful song and I just can't pick which of the two I like the most. A pearl for the band's fans. This songs has also been re-recorded with the World Music pakistani artist, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, to feature on Dead Man Walking's soundtrack (this version is significantly longer) and later, in 2001, for the benefit album «America: A Tribute to Heroes» (in a beautiful acoustic version, featuring Eddie Ceddr, Mike McCready and Neil Young=.
If you like Pearl Jam, I strongly suggest you to go and get this single. Even though it only has two songs, it's perfectly worth purchasing since these songs, especially when combined in one record, are true pearl's of the 90's music scene (and these versions of both songs can't be found elsewhere).
