Product Description

From Amazon.com

In evaluating a children's dictionary, there are two test words we always check first: "e-mail" and "iguana." After all, if "e-mail" doesn't appear in a dictionary, how up-to-date can it be? And iguanas, well, what kid doesn't want to read all about this "very large tropical American lizard with a ridge of tall scales along its back"? We are happy to report that this fine dictionary is above and beyond our gold standard. Not only are there definitions for each of the test words, there are illustrations for each, as well! This 912-page illustrated dictionary is packed with great information, including world maps on the inside covers, an easy-to-use how-to guide, and a reference section with facts and maps of the continents, pictures of flags from countries around the world, U.S. presidents and vice presidents, pronunciation guides, signs and symbols, and lots more. Sandwiched between this wealth of facts and figures are 846 pages of definitions with DK's trademark crisp, clear photographs illustrating many of the words. One of the handiest features in this volume is the multicolored alphabet running down the outer edges of every single page, with the featured letter highlighted for easy reference when flipping through. So get out there and e-mail all your iguana friends about this terrific reference guide! (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK def: a collection of paper that my 8 year old daughter can't put down!, July 20 2010
This review is from: Merriam Webster Childrens Dictionary Revised (Hardcover)
My nearly 9 year old daughter hasn't been able to put this one down! She seems to have forgotten all about DSi and the family channel - she begged to take it with her on a road trip and showed it off to family. Lots of photos, animal pics, and extra info (origins of words). It would make a great gift for the curious, budding intellectual or trivia geek!

5.0 out of 5 stars For the Inquisitive Mind, Oct 18 2010

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Merriam Webster Childrens Dictionary Revised (Hardcover)
As a child moves from 5 years old to 6, they will start to ask questions about things and words that are out of the scope of our "expertise". We found the solution to this problem with this book, MERRIAM-WEBSTER CHILDREN'S DICTIONARY (Ages 4-8). "Over 35,000 entries and more than 3,000 full-color illustrations", this reference guide will satisfy the inquisitive mind of your junior scientist at home. This dictionary is kid-approved as my son spotted it on the library shelf himself and could not be separated from it until he had his own copy. As he opened the pages and progressed from only looking at the pictures to fully digesting the definitions, we got the quiet time we needed and he got the answers he was looking for, accurately from DK's renowned language experts.

4.0 out of 5 stars As advertised, but corners were compressed, Oct 5 2010
The hard-cover book is indeed in very good condition, but it was mailed with only a single-layer of thin plastic around it. Presumably it was in transit that each of the corners of the book were compressed (squashed).

In every other way, I was quite satisfied with the purchase and delivery time. But other books I've purchased from other suppliers always came bubble-wrapped or in a cardboard box. I would strongly recommend to the supplier that they adopt a similar policy to keep their products from being damaged in transit.
