"To understand what's really happening in Iraq, most of us could switch off the news and read Ignorant Armies instead."
—Vancouver Sun

Product Description

As Iraq descends ever closer to civil war, no one doubts that George W. Bush's Iraq strategy has been an abysmal failure -- just as Gwynne Dyer argued it would be in both Ignorant Armies and Future: Tense. The question now is what will happen not just in Iraq but in the whole Middle East region once American troops are withdrawn. In The Mess They Made, Dyer predicts that the Middle East will go through the biggest shake up since the region was conquered and folded into the Ottoman Empire five centuries ago.

In his trademark vivid prose, and in arguments as clear as his research is thorough, Dyer brings his considerable knowledge and understanding of the region to bear on the issue of how widespread the meltdown in the Middle East will likely be. In five chapters, Dyer points the way from present policies and events to likely future developments in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and in the various other countries of the region, not least of which is nuclear-armed Israel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gwynne Dyer does it again, Jul 21 2007

Anyone who has read Dyer's other books will not be disappointed with this one. His ability to cut through the media releases and partisan politics to get to the simple facts makes this book unique. He predicted most of the current events long before they unfolded and I suspect that his analysis in this book of future events will be spot on as well.
If you only want to read one book on the middle east and US foreign policy, this is a good place to start. I also recommend "Future Tense" and "War" by the same author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended, Sep 4 2007

Mr. Dyer's clarity of style and substance really cuts through the flak sent up by the American government and media regarding the invasion and occupation of Iraq. After reading this book, one wonders how anyone at all could have fallen for the doomed neoconservative scheme for perpetual U.S. world domination. An excellent survey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Iraq and the future of the Middle East, Jul 17 2007

A great thesis on the possible outcomes of the war in Iraq and the consequences for Iraq, and the middle east after the Americans leave the country. Dyer's thesis on the reasons for the US invading Iraq in the first place was one I had never considered before and very compelling. Probably will surprise you as much as me. If you want to see some very interesting and compelling possibilites for the future of Iraq and the world in the next 5 to 15 years I highly recommend this book to you.
