Review

`...a richly detailed, wide-ranging, professional overview of all stages important to the process of performing plant ecological research plus information on the methods required.' Gregory P Cheplick, Department of Biology, City University of New York.

`The total length of the book is adequate for getting a first impression of methods in plant ecology; it is also well structured and highly readable.....A strong feature of the book is the extensive list of about 800 references which are fairly representative of current ecological literature; in some cases even references to relevant Internet pages are included.' Basic and Applied Ecology, Vol.4, 2003.

`a standard book for undergraduate students in ecology doing their first experimental research ... it will be of great value to teachers who are developing modules in population ecology.' Blumea, 2002.

Product Description

This new book is intended to assist senior undergraduates and post-graduate students design their own experiments and establish a research program in plant population ecology. Practical advice is provided on how to set up a research program, how to ask pertinent questions and use science process skills in conducting research. Individual chapters cover facets of experimental design, statistics, experimental variables and treatments, measurements of plants and their environment, spatial pattern analysis, life tables, and modelling. Numerous citations to the current research literature are provided, and four case studies are referred to throughout the book to illustrate the use of methodology. The book provides guidance for researchers so that they can critically evaluate the problem they are addressing, and determine the most suitable approach. The book will be of value to teachers who are developing field and laboratory modules in population ecology. * A user-friendly primer on the methodology of plant population ecology research. * Describes what sort of experiments to use, how to design them, and how to interpret, analyse, and report the results. * Designed for enquiry-based courses where students are asked to design and conduct their own experiments.

4.0 out of 5 stars Textbook and Professional Handbook Potential, April 10 2008
By Plant Doc - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Methods in Comparative Plant Population Ecology (Paperback)
I bought this book for a course in plant population biology offered by the author. Text is appropriate for graduate students and professionals. A solid text with clear, concise methodology. It's really an all-in-one handbook. I refer to it during experimental design and analysis phases.
