Art historical theory is a forum of intense, often passionate debate. This book provides a starting point for the art history student to the range of theoretical perspectives used in looking at and analysing art. It covers a broad range of approaches, presenting individual arguments, controversies and divergent perspectives. The book begins by introducing the concept of theory and explains why it is important to the practice of art history. Each of the six chapters that form the core of the book presents a group of related approaches that are then discussed in turn and applied to one or more works of art. The book ends with some practical ideas about writing theory-based art history essays.

Thorough, Succinct and Well Written

Ms. D'Alleva will soon be releasing a 2nd, updated, edition to this book written in 2009. I will likely purchase a copy of the update. I cannot exaggerate the necessity and importance of a text of this nature for today's undergrad and returning grad art students. The book is a perfect survey of modern and contemporary methods and theories of art history and criticism, written in part as a springboard for deeper investigations into the ways and means of creating and making art over the past 200 years. The most valuable aspect of the book is the way D'Alleva somewhat briefly summarizes the many and various theories and methods of art scholarship and immediately credits the foundational writers on the subjects, freely referring the reader to avenues for deeper investigation. My copy is riddled with notes and book marks and will be an invaluable source for my MFA thesis.
