Book Description

Feb. 29 2008 Dover Dual Language Spanish
Greatly influenced by Europe's nineteenth-century literary trends, Mexico's writers crafted some of the most phenomenal prose fiction in Spanish America. This collection offers a rich sampling of significant Mexican short stories published from 1843 to 1918. Nine different tales range from the realism of López Portillo's “Reloj sin dueño” and the modernismo saturating Gutiérrez Nájera's "La mañana de San Juan" to the historical accuracy of Riva Palacio's "Las mulas de Su Excelencia" and the vivid romanticism of "Amor secreto" by Manuel Payno, named the "father of Mexican short stories."
Each story appears in its original Spanish text with expert English translations on each facing page. This dual-language edition features a fascinating new introduction and ample footnotes. An easy-reading pleasure for lovers of fine Spanish-language literature, it is also a valuable educational aid for students and teachers.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mexican Short Stories Jan. 31 2013

Unfortunately this book does not suit my purpose. I need SHORT stories for my Spanish classes. My only criticism is it that these stories are too long. They are great for pleasure reading

4.0 out of 5 stars Cuentos Mexicanos - Dual Language April 25 2008
By Andrew B. Allsopp - Published on
I am thoroughly enjoying this book. I read it in Spanish first and when there is a problem I can just glance across the page at the English. The stories are most interesting.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Small Print, Pages slightly misaligned. Dec 20 2012
By MJKILLINGER - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Context is fine, but print is very small for the format. Almost impossible to find your place when going
back and forth from English to Spanish. Margins of printed area are also very strange / close to edge.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, Great Deal Feb. 11 2014

The price was very good and the condition was like new. I am very happy with my purchase, and will be looking to buy more of the same.
4.0 out of 5 stars Advanced level dual language reader with real Mexican literature, but footnotes and glossary would have helped. May 19 2013
By Oleh Weres - Published on
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Advanced level facing page, dual language reader. This is real Mexican literature, not baby talk. However, no footnotes or glossary with definitions, which would have been very useful.
