It might be a sweeping generalisation, but films are evolving to the point where careful study is necessary to soak up every last detail. Michael Clayton, the 2007 film starring George Clooney, is no exception. From the opening moments of the film, the audience is thrust into a world that doesn't quite make sense: a voice-over by one of the principal characters seems absolutely insane, yet compelling enough to get you to stick around for what comes next. And indeed, what comes next is a taut, psychological thriller that involves litigation, a lawsuit by plaintiffs suffering at the hands of a nameless corporation, and a lone underdog willing to fight the system to right these wrongs. You've heard it all before, right?

Michael Clayton, the titular character, is a "fixer," working for a large law firm to handle the small but significant problems that arise. From being called in to assist with a hit-and-run by a prestigious client, to playing babysitter to a senior partner suffering from acute bipolar syndrome, Clayton can do it all. The problem is that he's been doing it all for the past thirteen years and would rather be in the courtroom than out of it.

So when a problem arises with a huge case involving 500 plaintiffs that's about to come off the rails, Clayton is called in to fix it. The problem is that one of the other characters involved in the case will do anything -- anything -- to ensure that the case reaches a successful conclusion.

The characterisation in the film is powerful, wringing wrenching and thought-provoking performances from Tom Wilkinson, Sydney Pollack, and Tilda Swinton in particular. The plot never lets up either, with surprises waiting behind each bend of Tony Gilroy's outstanding story.

4.0 out of 5 stars A touch of realism May 6 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Among Clooney's better films, Michael Clayton touches briefly on the reality of corporate politics, and the dire consequences for those who swim against the corporate stream. Initially a strong plot, but with a weak, "cop-out" ending, something Clooney has done in many otherwise good films ( perhaps at the behest of his corporate sponsors ).

4.0 out of 5 stars I loved this movie. Feb. 5 2013

What more can I say. I loved this movie. I purchased it for a workshop where I needed a clip about conflict. I do recommend this movie, and of course, lots of people would buy this movie just for George Cluny.
