Book Description

This is the first critical edition of a Verne play; the book also contains many of his unpublished letters.  His theatrical work (40 plays and synopses) was, until now, almost unknown, even though Michel Strogoff was among the greatest successes of the late-19th century theatre.

The introduction begins with a portrait of Jules Verne the playwright and a description of the relationship between France and Russia in the 19th century.  A study of Michel Strogoff follows with a discussion of the genesis and creation of the play, major differences between the novel and the play, and Michel Strogoff as melodrama.  Finally the reviews are summarised, incidental music discussed, as well as the success of the play at the time.

From the Back Cover

--This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wild Adventure in Siberia, Oct 20 2000
By Glenn A. Knight - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: MICHEL STROGOFF (Mass Market Paperback)
Michel Strogoff is one of Jules Verne's classic adventure novels. It is not a terribly difficult or sophiticated book; like Journey to the Center of the Earth, it is what one might call a "Young Adult" (YA) book. There is a revolt of the Tartars, cutting off the forces of the Grand Duke, brother of the Tsar, in Irkutsk. Michel Strogoff, Tsar's Courier, has a messsage to carry to the Grand Duke. Along the way, Michel meets a young woman, who accompanies him on his adventure. We meet Michel's mother, villainous Tartars and a traitorous Russian, and some other interesting characters. Verne gives us a travelogue of Siberia in the mid-1800s as our characters travel by rail, by steamboat, by carriage, by foot, and by raft.

For those who are learning French, or polishing up their skills in that language, Michel Strogoff is excellent practice: interesting and not too complex.
