As an advanced student of Portuguese, I expected so much more. This "method" is basically four CDs containing the recordings of Camur as she explains --profusely, and in British English-- what she regards as the intricacies (e.g., nasal sounds, pesky conjugations) of peninsular Portuguese. Over and over (and over again), the listener must do just that, listen to the instructor pontificate about what she supposes (according to the "method") are fine-tuning aspects of speaking Portuguese. The same exact thing --but done mostly if not exclusively in Portuguese-- might have earned the "Advanced" level. Dry, tiresome, vexing, and pointless-as-labeled, I remain shocked that some users have found this material useful. HOW does one learn much from four CDs-worth of after-class-like conversations with a cantankerous instructor whose 95%-plus instruction consists of her talking to "students" about the target language (peninsular Portuguese) IN ENGLISH? Apparently, some do, but most definitely not me.

Contradictory to the first review, this set of recordings, as well as the first set, is very good. It gives its instruction in European Portuguese, with a strong emphasis on the conjugation of verbs, and reinforced pronunciation of all recorded phrases and sentences, very important in Portuguese, whether European or Brazilian.Ms. Catmur is encouraging and leads the students in a positive and affirmative manner, an excellent trait for a language teacher of any language, not to mention this one.

Just as good as if Michel Thomas were doing it himself. This program reviews the foundation course and then moves to cover the more complex structures of the language--giving you a solid skeleton to move forward from. For me, the Michel Thomas works wonders and so I heartily recommend it. If I strained to find a bone to pick with the course, it'd be that it covers European and not Brazilian Portuguese. The differences are covered in the last track of the foundation course. In any case, if you are interested and motivated to learn Portuguese, buy this course. It works very well. I hope they produce a language builder for Portuguese using the Michel Thomas Method!
