The Atlas is ok but I find that the print is too small for my eyes. When you are travelling on the road it is an irritant to look at the maps because of the size of the fonts (especially on bumpy roads). Another aspect is the use of different scales for the US and Canada. I prefer the scale for the US since it is a larger one and it should have been used for both countries. Overall it is a good atlas but I would not recommend it for older people because of the size of the print.

A good travelling companion and easy to use. My only complaint is that the pages (compared to my last version from 2008) are much thinner and feel a touch fragile.

The best things about this atlas is it spiral binding, its organization into areas rather than alphabetical, and the overall quality of the maps themselves. Spiral binding is the only way to go for a map that may be used in a car and needs to be kept open to a particular page, don't try that with a staple-bound atlas or you will have ripped pages. The organization of the map requires you to first look at the inside cover for a key to where your desired map will be. The best thing is that once you are there the maps of adjacent areas are likely to be nearby in the atlas. This means less fumbling. The maps themselves are nicely done with clearly marked roads, icons, route numbers, and major sightseeing areas. Maps for Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and the US are included so this can be used for all kinds of travel plans. The only weakness I found was that the state of New Jersey, one of the most highly populated in the US has poor coverage for the southern end of the state. They used a 1" to 18 mile scale and split the state on the spiral binding...usable but a letdown from the quality of the other 49 state maps. I prefer this atlas to other ones I have seen. I use a GPS all the time but it is still good to have an atlas for the big picture, planning of long trips, and as a backup for situations where the electronics let you down.

I really like the Spiral edition, it is very clean to page through and in my opinion very detailed. Michelin makes the cleanest road views I've seen on road maps. I travel mostly in the Pacific Northwest and the South, and those sections are quite detailed on here. The only drawback I can see is the smaller page size and smaller font (on the spiral ed.), which for me isn't a problem, keeps my eyes trained for small reading and makes the book more practical for storing behind the seat or carrying around. However, if you think this is not gonna work for you while on the road, you may want to go with the Large Format paper edition, which is not a spiral and has larger pages with greater font. That kind tends to get more beat up over time because it's like a paperback book if you constantly bend it all the way back to hold your page, and then stick it between the seats without closing it, pages get bent and so forth.Either way, a good option. If, like me, you grew up in an itsy-bitsy northeastern state and then moved to a similar one, you get used to seeing a road map on which places with a bit of distance between them are not so far to drive to in real life. Then you try driving in New Mexico or Saskatchewan or wherever and places fairly close together on the map take quite a while to drive. This road atlas is the cure. All the maps for the western U.S. are to one scale, all the maps for the East are to a somewhat finer scale.In addition, there are maps to an even finer scale for the Northeast Corridor, and many cities have maps, some an entire page. Canada, Alaska, and Mexico maps also appear. I find leaping across the spiral from the left-hand page to the right-hand page a little troublesome, so you may wish to consider the non-spiral version. For certain areas, say Rhode Island, of course the more traditional road atlases will have more detail. There's no reason not to have two or more atlases from different publishers a few years apart. There are some inaccuracies. For example, in Maryland, highway 28 now meets highway 198. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library doesn't appear. In Vincennes, the Old Cathedral Complex is shown vaguely to the southeast, but in reality it abuts the National Historic Park to the north -- the same mistake appears on one of the competitors' maps; hm. All in all, this atlas will be quite a pleasant addition for the next road trip. |
