Microsoft Office 2003 Proofing Tools includes spelling and grammar checkers, thesauruses, AutoCorrect lists, Hyphenator, and other editing tools that help users create and edit Office documents in more than 50 languages. Proofing tools for all languages are included on a single CD, but you can install the tools for only the languages that users need.
Proofing tools are also included in the Microsoft Office 2003 Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI Pack). The same proofing tools that come with localized versions of Office 2003 are included in the corresponding MUI Pack for each language.
Hard disk space requirements for Office 2003 Proofing Tools vary by language. For instance, Proofing Tools for German requires 48 MB of hard disk space; Proofing Tools for Chinese (Simplified) requires 365 MB. Asian languages require as much as 120 MB of hard disk space to include the necessary fonts and Input Method Editors (IMEs).

Why must I pay extra for a common language like GERMAN?, Jan 12 2007

If languages like Spanish and French are included in the STANDARD MS Word dictionary, a common language like GERMAN should be included as well. Why do I have to pay extra ($79.95 LIST) for an overly comprehensive dictionary that includes every obscure language, script, and dialect in the world to get a single common language like German? This sems discriminatory!Overall MS "Proofing Tools" seems to be a good package, but I feel GOUGED at what I have to pay to get a single additional COMMON language. It would be better if only English was standard in MS Word and if, with each Word license, a buyer could get a free download of one or two common languages of the buyer's choice.

This software adds some very useful foreign-language proofing tools to MS Office. I use it for Korean and am very happy with it.

This is not a great product for Arabic. Microsoft brags that its "Translation Dictionary" for Arabic, included in the software, includes a database of 450,000 words culled from all the major dictionaries out there. But if you try to enter in a semantic grouping of two or more words, such as a verb plus a preposition, you usually get "no entry found." This problem also applies to words that are inflected in any way. Also, the voweling is not included. No voweling , inflections, or verbal phrases!?! DO NOT BUY THIS for Arabic, EVEN if it is your only choice....I am bilingual in Chinese. In all fairness, the conversion tools for characters are useful, but as for the dictionary, the Taiwanese Ministry of Education, Dr. Eye and Jinshanci offer FREE dictionaries that are more useful than this costly one by Microsoft. If you are from Microsoft: 1) please give us a browsable dictionary, 2) include the Arabic vowelling! 3) fire your current Arabists and hire someone better! I feel cheated! For Arabic I wish I could give this an even lower rating. For Chinese and Korean it probably deserves a positive 3 or 4, not higher because there are free or less expensive products that contain many of this products' features and are of better quality. If you are going to charge us $70, make the product good, please. Consumers: BE WARNED!
