This review is from: Blue Dragon - Bilingual (Video Game)
For the longest time RPG afficiandos have waited for a decent RPG asides Oblivion. And with Blue Dragon, Microsoft has made a good start, the game itself is a very traditional game, with great graphics and some depth. Although, the game has some heavy weight developers with the guy who developed Final Fantasy and Lost Odyssey, as well as Akira Toriyama, the man who did the character design for Dragon Quest VIII and Dragon Ball. This game was posed to be what we've all missed. However, the game does disappoint a little, with the traditional gameplay and battle mode, as well as the cheesy dialogue. As Shu, you are a small kid who is trying to save his city from a "Land Shark" with his friends, only to be abducted by Nene a small floating chair ridden creature that wishes to rule to the world and eliminate humans. But here is where the game is interesting, at the very beginning you know nothing about the back story or the history that involves Nene and his people, only later do you start figuring out what's going on. However, this slows the story and character development which a player may not enjoy. Also there are no weapons, the only thing that is a weapon is the shadow dragon that you get, you can upgrade and unlock new attacks, as well as attributes that'll help you along. This game comes in three disc, and to be honest I would've enjoyed my the characters get older as the story progressed, like Fable, instead of keeping them young and annoying. The environments are beautiful sometimes, but other times like when you're outside a dungeon or travelling in the world the camera takes an almost over-the-head perspective making the game very sparce with the surroundings, lots of desert and snow plains. Also with the three discs it makes the game very long, which is both good and bad, with not knowing a whole lot about what's going on, nor are there lots of side-quests, something that would make this game amazing, like in Final Fantasy. Don't get me wrong this game is a good one, but it'll only get you ready for the better RPGs coming out later on, like Eternal Sonata, Mass Effect, and Lost Odyssey. This is still a very good game and a great start for Microsoft to get deeper into RPGs and JRPGs.
