I was looking for some detailed information on form fields and locking them but couldn't find what I was looking for. Finally gave up and did what I usually do and that's a google search and Susan Barnwell of Microsoft had the info. Also the info on styles was minimal.

HASH(0xa32cf7e0) out of 5 stars Tough book to learn from Jan. 12 2011
By J. White - Published on
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
My main purpose in purchasing this book was to prepare for the Word 2010 Expert certification exam (currently in Beta mode). Microsoft recommends the "Inside Out" series for the Expert level certification exams.

The Bad:

What makes this a tough book to learn from is that no practice files or follow-along content were developed for this book. This is pretty standard practice for these types of books, especially from Microsoft Press, so I was really surprised no such material was developed.

So unless you have lengthy personal documents handy where you can practice making bibliographies, indices, etc., you're left trying to apply the concepts to whatever Word documents you have lying around on your hard drive. Although I did well on the test and probably would not have done so without this book, I spent far more time than I should have on learning the content, because I often had nothing on hand to which I could apply the concepts.

Macros- this book does not prepare you to learn VBA, a subject area for which I bet some people will buy this book. It's well known that no "gold standard" book on Word VBA exists, but all this book does is spend a few pages describing how to record a macro and how to navigate VBE, then directs you to the Word MVP group website to learn VBA by reading posts. The book completely dodges any serious attempt at teaching Word macros.

I also have to point that I ran into more grammatical and spelling errors in this book than I've ever come across in a technology book. Not what you would expect in a word processing book!

The Good:

The free ebook is a very nice touch (requires free registration on Safari Books Online, well worth it to access the ebook).

I passed the Expert test and this is the only book I used for studying. I started out with a decent working knowledge of Word but without this book I would not have passed the exam.

If you are trying to get Expert certified in Word, this book will do the trick, as long as you stay extremely patient and apply all the concepts while following along. Just grab the longest Word document you have available and you should be able to find ways to make it work.

So I give 3 stars because I have to ding it heavily for lacking practice files and a thorough discussion of macros, offset in part by coming packaged with a free ebook version and the fact that I was able to use it to pass the test.

HASH(0xa32cfc0c) out of 5 stars Must have manual for all MS Word users Dec 30 2011

I've read this book front to back. What I really liked was the "soft" pages and how eady it is to handle the book - it just feels good! This book touches on all the topics you are ever likely to come across when using Word. It gives good easy to understand explanations and great instructions on where to find command buttons and functions. I found it a little too basic at times though. It lacks in indepth troubleshooting tips and also does not delve very deep into topics. For example after working through a chapter on bullets and numbering, you will still find yourself not quite the expert. It would be good to have had a more advanced book on Word in the same format and written in the same style by the same author(s). I found a few more tips in the Inside Out Advanced Documents 2007 edition and from google.

The writing style and language is excellent, not overly technical and easy to read.

HASH(0xa32cfe34) out of 5 stars sometimes careless and slipshod May 31 2012

I have been a WordPerfect user for years, but I do a lot of typesetting for books and most of the files I receive from the authors are in Word and do not convert perfectly to WordPerfect, so I am trying to get used to Word 2010, despite its limitations (no "reveal codes," etc). Since many of the codes for Word are different than WordPerfect's, I bought this book, thinking I could quickly look things up when necessary. Unfortunately, Microsoft does not use standard, time-honored terminology (such as "dot leader" for the row of dots in the contents page), so one has to try to guess the entry in the index--but even if you find what you want there, you don't find the information you need on the page indicated. It appears the book was revised or repaginated after the index was compiled and they didn't bother to correct it.

HASH(0xa32cfd2c) out of 5 stars Basics and Intermediate but No Advanced Sept. 15 2012
By Kindle Customer - Published on

I found that this book, as in any other step-by-step book, covered the basics and intermediate topics well. However, I was dissappointed at the quick and shallow covering of more advanced topics such as macros, indexing, cross referencing, and options. Overall, this is a good book for someone new to Word or new to the 2010 version. If you want help with more advanced topics, as I do, this isn't the book for you.

This is an intermediate book and has good detail about some of the inner workings of Word 2010. I am still learning from it and it will take some time to complete more. I have been using word processing since "Word Mark".
