This album definately has more than one face to it: Emotionally charged ballads such as 'Her Ghost In The Fog' and 'Saffron's Curse' to more heavier tracks such as 'Lord Abortion' and 'Cthulu Dawn' mixed in with soft instrumentals such as 'Creatures That Kissed In Cold Mirrors' and 'At The Gates of Midian'.
This album is definately worth the money, Like I said, Very listenable, even when youre in a different mood. Happy, Sad, Angry...
This is my favorite Cradle of Filth album. The music almost provides a mental landscape, if you really listen to it.
I recommend this album for those just getting into Cradle of Filth.
Anyway, On with the review
01. 'At The Gates of Midian'
A nice track... Nothing special about it, doesn't do the rest of the album justice.
02. 'Cthulu Dawn'
One of the heaviest on the album, I think this most suits the "black metal" genre. This track should give you an idea of whats to come with the rest of the album.
03. 'Saffron's Curse'
Well, Well, Well... One of my favorites on the album. A beautiful, dark, emotionally-charged ballad what seems to be about a man's spouse who has died(My description may sound similar to that of Her Ghost In The Fog, but trust me both of the songs have huge differences)This song really lays down the Orchestrated sense of the album.
04. 'Death Magick For Adepts'
This track doesnt really show-case the album, it's still alright.
05. 'Lord Abortion'
AMAZING song, I don't think the lyrics are that great through most of the song but it's got a good rhythm, very catchy. But what I favor in this song is the breakdown. The violins, The cellos, And the bass, along with Dani's cracky, Terrifying howls, pure genius.
06. 'Amor E Morte'
A lot of people seem to like this one, But as I've said before about Death Magick For Adepts, This doesn't show-case the album. It's easy to listen to though.
07. 'Creatures That Kissed In Cold Mirrors'
Another one of my favorites. This is by far my favorite instrumental track by any artist. It's very relaxing in an eerie sort of way.
08. 'Her Ghost In The Fog'
Probably the most known on the album, Favored by many. I like it, it's just a tad simple though, Seems that a man had showed some interest in a witch, and she was hunted down in the forest by villagers.
09. 'Satanic Mantra'
A some-what annoying track. Just a group of people chanting some sort of eerie rhyme, maybe even a "spell". A lot of people say it's a filler, but I think it's more like an intro to Tearing The Veil From Grace
10. 'Tearing The Veil From Grace'
This song really reminds me of some classic metal tunes, I can't describe which. But this is a great song, Not one of my favorites but, still, It is a very beautiful song.
11. 'Tortured Soul Asylum'
My favorite on the album. Very creepy and haunting. Near the end it has some beautiful orchisrated sections. I think this track along with Saffron's Curse is really what this album is about.
All in all, A very good listen. I bought this album when it first came out and I still find myself listening to it atleast once a day.
I find that their combination of hard guitars with softer instruments makes great-sounding music. When I listen to some of the tracks at work, I find myself more productive/typing faster, too.
1. at the gates of midian- a very soothing song (10/10)
