This album is probably one of the band's softer creations, which is good, to me atleast. I'm not really that much of a "metal" fan, but this, like most of Cradle of Filth's albums, is very listenable. Combining roughly distorted guitars, Heavy(yet cliche`) drums, Clear bass, with soothing orchestrated overtones to create a dark winter night's dream(or nightmare, you be the judge).
This album definately has more than one face to it: Emotionally charged ballads such as 'Her Ghost In The Fog' and 'Saffron's Curse' to more heavier tracks such as 'Lord Abortion' and 'Cthulu Dawn' mixed in with soft instrumentals such as 'Creatures That Kissed In Cold Mirrors' and 'At The Gates of Midian'.
This album is definately worth the money, Like I said, Very listenable, even when youre in a different mood. Happy, Sad, Angry...
This is my favorite Cradle of Filth album. The music almost provides a mental landscape, if you really listen to it.
I recommend this album for those just getting into Cradle of Filth.
Anyway, On with the review
01. 'At The Gates of Midian'
A nice track... Nothing special about it, doesn't do the rest of the album justice.
02. 'Cthulu Dawn'
One of the heaviest on the album, I think this most suits the "black metal" genre. This track should give you an idea of whats to come with the rest of the album.
03. 'Saffron's Curse'
Well, Well, Well... One of my favorites on the album. A beautiful, dark, emotionally-charged ballad what seems to be about a man's spouse who has died(My description may sound similar to that of Her Ghost In The Fog, but trust me both of the songs have huge differences)This song really lays down the Orchestrated sense of the album.

This is the kind of music that makes Cradle great. As usual, you have to listen to it a few times, and then it really grows on you. The lyrics are brilliant, and are sung with a passion that is seldom seen these days. It has some really great tracks, like "Her Ghost in the Fog" and "Tortured Soul Asylum", which are some of my favourites.
I find that their combination of hard guitars with softer instruments makes great-sounding music. When I listen to some of the tracks at work, I find myself more productive/typing faster, too.

as the essance of the movie nightbreed, this album captures everything. From dani's perfectly placed screeches, sarahs operatic voice. To Doug bradley's voice [pinhead] talking in death magic to adepths, and her ghost in the fog. The drums, bass, and gutairs from start to finish are brillantly done for this dark, hard, sad, and beautifully done gothic musical story of midain - the hidden city where the monsters live.

Now. Midian is a great album but some parts just don't feel as good as past work. Now The Principle of evil made flesh and dusk and her embrace were heavier then Cruelty and the beast, BUT the guitar work, lyrics and keyboards were alot better. I always hear Midian was the album that made them mainstream. How? They didn't sell millions of albums, make 6 singles. Have guest appearences on mtv. Just doing what they have always done. I think even though the lyrics aren't up to par with cof, I feel "her ghost in the fog" was beautifully written of love lost. This was also Gian's last LP with the band, he was my favorite cof guitarist and it was sad to see him leave. At 1st I truly disliked this album. Would have given it three stars at most but as I listened to it more and more I began to really warm up to it. Sarah (backing female vocals) seems to be improving her already beautiful vocals which is quite obvious on "her ghost in the fog" and "tearing the veil from grace" If you love cof you will find some enjoyment out of this even if not as much as others. Enjoy.

I am no long term CoF fan by any means (meaning I just recently got into them about 7 months ago) but I personally enjoyed this album. Granted the old stuff was incrediable but I can still see the greatness in this album also. I have seen and read that the veteran fans are somewhat put off by the new stuff and I can somewhat see why they are because of CoF's direction change, but personally I enjoy both the old and the new and am hoping that a) a new album will come out soon and b) that it will satisfy both the veterans and the new fans. And lets face it folks CoF will always at least be better the slipknot and their band of quote un-quote "musicians," .

This CD is by far the best one Dani Filth has put out. It has better sound, song writing, lyrics, artwork, etc... than all the other CD's he released. Get this one before all of the other ones and you will find that the other CD's are mediocre compared to Midian.
