It would be easy to bridle at Midian's relentless bombast and obsession with all things Goth. Many would detest a purposefully pretentious mix of Carl Orff and Obituary that occasionally collapses into early '80s-style prog-metal. And then there's J.K. Potter's laughable artwork, wherein band members look like characters in Clive Barker's miserable Night Breed, the source of the album's name. But there's also a lot here to appreciate. Frontman Dani Filth is becoming ever more convincing in his attempts to offend; some turns of phrase in his blood-spattered romances even manage to recall Keats and Byron. Musically, they seldom fail to entertain and sometimes reach the operatic heights of Laibach and Lacrimosa. More reading and refinement by this lot may produce the first Goth masterpiece since the Sisters of Mercy's First and Last and Always. --Dominic Wills

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, Enchanting, Beautiful April 7 2004
Format:Audio CD
This album is probably one of the band's softer creations, which is good, to me atleast. I'm not really that much of a "metal" fan, but this, like most of Cradle of Filth's albums, is very listenable. Combining roughly distorted guitars, Heavy(yet cliche`) drums, Clear bass, with soothing orchestrated overtones to create a dark winter night's dream(or nightmare, you be the judge).

This album definately has more than one face to it: Emotionally charged ballads such as 'Her Ghost In The Fog' and 'Saffron's Curse' to more heavier tracks such as 'Lord Abortion' and 'Cthulu Dawn' mixed in with soft instrumentals such as 'Creatures That Kissed In Cold Mirrors' and 'At The Gates of Midian'.

This album is definately worth the money, Like I said, Very listenable, even when youre in a different mood. Happy, Sad, Angry...

This is my favorite Cradle of Filth album. The music almost provides a mental landscape, if you really listen to it.

I recommend this album for those just getting into Cradle of Filth.
Anyway, On with the review

01. 'At The Gates of Midian'

A nice track... Nothing special about it, doesn't do the rest of the album justice.

02. 'Cthulu Dawn'

One of the heaviest on the album, I think this most suits the "black metal" genre. This track should give you an idea of whats to come with the rest of the album.

03. 'Saffron's Curse'

Well, Well, Well... One of my favorites on the album. A beautiful, dark, emotionally-charged ballad what seems to be about a man's spouse who has died(My description may sound similar to that of Her Ghost In The Fog, but trust me both of the songs have huge differences)This song really lays down the Orchestrated sense of the album.

04. 'Death Magick For Adepts'

This track doesnt really show-case the album, it's still alright.

05. 'Lord Abortion'

AMAZING song, I don't think the lyrics are that great through most of the song but it's got a good rhythm, very catchy. But what I favor in this song is the breakdown. The violins, The cellos, And the bass, along with Dani's cracky, Terrifying howls, pure genius.

06. 'Amor E Morte'

A lot of people seem to like this one, But as I've said before about Death Magick For Adepts, This doesn't show-case the album. It's easy to listen to though.

07. 'Creatures That Kissed In Cold Mirrors'

Another one of my favorites. This is by far my favorite instrumental track by any artist. It's very relaxing in an eerie sort of way.

08. 'Her Ghost In The Fog'

Probably the most known on the album, Favored by many. I like it, it's just a tad simple though, Seems that a man had showed some interest in a witch, and she was hunted down in the forest by villagers.

09. 'Satanic Mantra'

A some-what annoying track. Just a group of people chanting some sort of eerie rhyme, maybe even a "spell". A lot of people say it's a filler, but I think it's more like an intro to Tearing The Veil From Grace

10. 'Tearing The Veil From Grace'

This song really reminds me of some classic metal tunes, I can't describe which. But this is a great song, Not one of my favorites but, still, It is a very beautiful song.

11. 'Tortured Soul Asylum'

My favorite on the album. Very creepy and haunting. Near the end it has some beautiful orchisrated sections. I think this track along with Saffron's Curse is really what this album is about.

All in all, A very good listen. I bought this album when it first came out and I still find myself listening to it atleast once a day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Addictive listening April 4 2004

This is the kind of music that makes Cradle great. As usual, you have to listen to it a few times, and then it really grows on you. The lyrics are brilliant, and are sung with a passion that is seldom seen these days. It has some really great tracks, like "Her Ghost in the Fog" and "Tortured Soul Asylum", which are some of my favourites.

I find that their combination of hard guitars with softer instruments makes great-sounding music. When I listen to some of the tracks at work, I find myself more productive/typing faster, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars over-whelming beautiful Feb 20 2004
Format:Audio CD
as the essance of the movie nightbreed, this album captures everything. From dani's perfectly placed screeches, sarahs operatic voice. To Doug bradley's voice [pinhead] talking in death magic to adepths, and her ghost in the fog. The drums, bass, and gutairs from start to finish are brillantly done for this dark, hard, sad, and beautifully done gothic musical story of midain - the hidden city where the monsters live.
