4.0 out of 5 stars Great product so far March 15 2013

Charged it up then tested it out and it seemed to work great. From what information I have gathered I will be doing my best to protect it from water damage, to be on the safe side, even though it states a level of waterproofing.

One thing that is misleading is that there is a clear dry bag for the radio in the picture and this was not included in the bundle. It did come with 2 types of chargers, one for car lighter and one for the wall, the vox hands free speaker/mic, the rechargeable battery and the stand. I will also be creating a laminated cheat sheet to keep handy with the radio for some of the basic programming. It is by no means difficult to operate. I need something to help me remember all the functions while I become familiar with it. I will have to find my own dry bag that fits it, either a dry bag or some kind of small protective case that will allow me to keep all the parts together for storage.

Radio transmission sounds clear after activation and everything else seems positive. I'll update if I gather any more important info later.

5.0 out of 5 stars Requires a brain Jan. 8 2013

If you find this radio confusing, you should not be operating a boat on open water,as you are putting people with a brain at risk. This radio is so simple to use, the previous complaints are ridicules. It's a great bargain, no its not submersible!!! Put it in a ziplock bag or dry box for that security. In the case of an emergency hit the big orange button and talk, how is that difficult??? Worth every penny, they only nice to have feature, would have been the ability to chose the scan list. Other than that two thumbs up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't understand what all the fuss is about... March 11 2012
By Brion Dolan - Published on Amazon.com
I received this radio as a gift a few months back. I use it for weather info & emergency calling when I'm out kayaking, and I've been pleased with the unit so far. It picks up NOAA weather radio very well on the water (in the car & house, too). I've used it a few times for non-emergency calling to other boaters over moderate distances (1-2 miles), and have had no problems either understanding them or being understood. Granted, it doesn't have the range of a higher-power mounted/powered unit with separate antenna, but it's good enough for my purposes. It's nice that it's water resistant, and is easy to use with gloves on. I also like the flexibility of using the included rechargeable battery, or regular alkaline batteries (kind of hard to use a charger in a kayak, but there's always room for a few extra AA's in the drybag). I haven't used the included headset. I found the user interface to be relatively straightforward. I took about 5 min to actually read the manual and try it out, and it was smooth sailing after that. Press the menu button to access various settings, including changing the channel or power. Press and hold the menu button to toggle between weather & VHF bands. Emergency calling (VHF channel 16) is even easier...just press the bright orange "CH 16" button, regardless of what mode you're in. That's it. Just one button. Can't understand the really negative reviews. I've used various Uniden products before, and have found them to be overpriced and underwhelming. The same goes for West Marine products. ICOM radios are definitely a step up, but so is the price tag. This Midland unit is an inexpensive, but not cheap, handheld VHF that works well.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Decent Radio! Just Beware of Its Limitations!! Feb. 1 2011
By Luigi - Published on Amazon.com
The Midland Nautico 3 is a decent radio for the price. It's not a radio designed for everyday use, but it has the potential to work reasonably well for occasional and/or backup use. It's rated "waterproof"; however, it's only "JIS4" waterproof which means spash/rain proof, but not submersible! Personally, I think it's precariously misleading for Midland to use the "waterproof" designation because some people *may* bet more than they intended on the fact it's "waterproof". In any case, this radio has reasonable reception/transmit capabilities based on line-of-sight characteristics. Your range may only be 1/2 mile or up to 5 miles or so depending on terrain. Don't count on it to provide you with consistent 5-10 mile range--no 5 or 6 watt handheld can do that. Another operating characteristic that I consider just as problematic as Midland's waterproof rating is the "button pushing" sequence necessary to operate the radio. Unless you use this radio everyday, you'll never master accessing this radio's menu functions quickly. If you bring this radio out of retirement for an emergency, you may find yourself unable to quickly figure out basic functions such as changing channels or quickly accessing your current and/or channel 16/9 without a few minutes delay--especially when you're under duress during an emergency! I had to permanently attach a one-page "cheat sheet" to my radio to put my mind at ease for those infrequent occasions when I use it for recreational purposes. For comparison, I also own a Standard Horizon HX850s VHF radio and I was able to use every single feature (except DSC) intuitively in less than a minute when I first used it--didn't need the manual whatsoever. You *WILL* need the Midland Nautico 3 manual to use most of its features--unless, of course, you bust codes for a living--lol! Depending on your expectations and how you intend to use the Midland Nautico 3, it could be a good purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Midland has awesome customer service! June 8 2012
By riggerdood - Published on Amazon.com

Bought this radio earlier this year for use on a 4-day "cruise-in-company" trip in my small sailboat, in order to be able to communicate with the other boats. Worked great the first two days, then we had rough seas on the third day, and the radio got wet and quit working. It did not get submerged, but took some pretty good splashing: I had green water coming over the bow and into the cockpit!

When I got home I sent it back to Midland, with a copy of my Amazon proof of purchase, asking them to repair or replace it, at my cost if necessary. I did not have high hopes, but they promptly sent me a brand new replacement, no questions asked! That kind of customer service is so rare these days ...

I would gladly buy from Midland in the future!

1.0 out of 5 stars Radio is not waterproof July 24 2013
By David - Published on Amazon.com
I actually never opened the box. As it was being shipped, I discovered this website [...] which nicely compares the options. In their review of this model, it had poor radio performance and failed a submersion test. On looking at the description more thoroughly, it is only rated JIS4, which means "splash-resistant" so the full description is not false. However, the title of "waterproof marine radio" is false. For an emergency device on a kayak, I need something truly "waterproof." The webpage above basically says you need to pay $100 to get a good radio, but likely no more. As I reviewed things, this seemed to be true.

Models under $100
Midland Nautico 3 - not waterproof
Uniden MHS050 - not waterproof, no weather radio
Cobra HH125 - not waterproof
Standard Horizon hx100 ($150 for 2 radios) - this looks promising as it is waterproof and floats, but I opted against as it's only 2.5 Watts

I ended up going with the Standard Horizon HX150 at $100 dollars. A little cheaper than the Standard Horizon HX280s ($120) which got great reviews on multiple sites. The main difference seems to be the 150 has a smaller battery with shorter life. Both float and are waterproof and can transmit at 5 watts. I don't have the expertise to quantitatively test how well the radio works.
