I bought this game for two reasons:
1. because I am a collector of all things Poe, and
2. because the tiny screenshot pictures on the back of the case looked REALLY pretty.
In terms of prettiness, this game does not disappoint. It's primarily a hidden-pictures game and the background art is absolutely STUNNING. It's like... Thomas Kinkade does the macabre. Given all you do for the majority of the game is stare at the screen and look for tiny details, it makes good sense that every screen is an absolute joy to look at, with the details of every scene rendered not just realistically, but with a wonderful aesthetic eye, making this game truly a piece of art.
The down side to the game is that... it's short. Really, REALLY short. I just bought it and beat it in about 2 hours. It's also incredibly linear -- you do not make choices, there is literally no way to play this game WRONG, or to lose.
While it is based on Poe and you do solve murder mysteries, there is no violence or gore at all. The most graphic this game ever gets is to show skeletons in a crypt. Oh, and the people leading you along through the plot are ghosts. Still, unless your child is really sensitive to anything even a little bit creepy, I would recommend this game for all ages. Even as an adult, I enjoyed it a lot, I was just sorry it was so short.
So if you like hidden picture games, by all means, get this game. It's worth getting JUST for the absolutely beautiful artwork -- but if you're an adult player, know that you're going to get through it REALLY quickly, so get it used and don't pay too much for it. The replay value is okay, since I think the game randomly generates which items you have to find in each level, but for adult players, unless you're a big Poe fan, I'd recommend Mystery Case Files: MillionHeir from Nintendo for the DS instead. It also has beautifully rendered backgrounds, but it's a much longer game with more challenging puzzles and a more detailed and in-depth storyline.
Bottom line: I think this would be a fantastic game to give as a gift to a child aged around 8-12 along with the book "The Man Who Was Poe" by Avi. Great way to generate interest in classic literature without exposing them to a whole lot of graphic creepiness.

This game is entirely too short and geared towards the kids. The graphics and sound are very good but the $[...] is way too much for this game. Wait until the price comes down before buying.

As an adult gamer who likes seek and find I particularly liked this game. It was a step above the rest. Great story line, great graphics with ghosts giving clues then vanishing with a puff of fog. If you like seek and find this is a superior game..
