Lately I've had some trepidation about buying vinyl reissues as they often seem to lack the sound quality of the originals; however, as my chances of finding an original of this release at a reasonable price was pretty slim, I took the chance. I'm glad I did. I put this on the turntable (Linn LP12) and wandered off to the kitchen to start prepping supper, but the sound drew me right back to the listening chair within a minute. I've been enjoying this album for ages as 16bit digital through my Theta Casablanca Extreme DAC, but the vinyl sounds like a completely different animal. The digital version seems to be severely limited which I had assumed was just tape saturation, but it's not there on the vinyl; instead the album has a new found sense of dynamics and punch while maintaining a smooth sense of composure. Whoever pressed this did it right.
The live album that comes with this package is great. Live albums often lack fidelity due to the limitations of the recording, but this one's great, and the band is really on, with some fresh interpretations worth hearing.
