"The Green Man" concerns a pair of overlapping investigations with an environmental theme. When an effort to restore a stream uncovers the remains of several people who died in a long-ago, tunnel cave-in, Barnaby discovers that one of the apparent victims was actually placed on the site much later. Meanwhile, adolescent hoodlums harassing an indigent woodsman are turning up dead. "Bad Tidings" introduces Barnaby's new partner, Detective Sergeant Dan Scott (John Hopkins), unhappy about his transfer from London and reluctant to settle in. But he pulls his weight assisting Barnaby on a strange case that begins with the murder of a woman walking home from a flamenco-themed party at the Midsomer Mallow village hall. (A recurring theme in Midsomer Murders of hatred and deception running rampant among trustees of Midsomers social and cultural life plays a big part here.) "The Fisher King" resurrects an old, unsolved mystery concerning the death of a man who excavated ancient artifacts, while Barnaby and Scott also try to find out who killed an arrogant millionaire with a wound similar to the one suffered by the titular, Arthurian figure. Finally, "Sins of Commission" is a wild episode peeling back secrecy surrounding sexual and fiduciary scandals surrounding a literary festival. Adding both to the drama and fun is the way Barnaby's wife (Jane Wymark) and daughter (Laura Howard) have a way of getting involved with every investigation. With a likable, low-key hero and creative new forms of Midsomer malice, Set Seven is a winner. --Tom Keogh

Midsommer Murders: Set 7,

This review is from: Midsomer Murders Set 7 (DVD)
I'm glad I bought this set because it has a DVD "The Green Man" in which Sgt Troy passes his Inspecter's exam and moves to New Castle. This brings closure to the character. Besides this a an exellent mystery. The new Sgt. Dan Scott transferred from London finds himself out of place in the country. As he says in exasperation to D.I Barnaby "So I can't tell one herd of chicken from another.", in his first episode "Bad Tidings" featuring a murder set around Barnaby's daughter, Cully. Barnaby is his lovable, cantankerous self ruled gently by his wife and daughter despite his power at work.I always have trouble adjusting to a major character change and this is no exception, but I give the new actors a chance. In this episode Scott is charming bordering on smarmy and reveals he's only in Midsomer because it was recommended he transfer and he as no intention of staying. I had no real sense of Scott in the next two episodes, but I recommend this one to provide closure with Gavin and the mysteries with Barnaby and Scott are up to the series usual high quality. If you're as attached to the series as I am this one is worth owning despite the change in Sargents. I gave it four stars because I bought series 8 and I suggest you stop here unless you like Sgt. Scott. I'll explain in my review of series 8.

This review is from: Midsomer Murders Set 7 (DVD)
I bought this set (7) because of The Green Man - absolutely one of my favourite episodes of Midsomer. Troy is preparing to go his own way and meanwhile (back at the ranch) Tom Barnaby has his own mystery to solve. All of this, of course, links up perfectly at the end. It romps along right from the start and has just about everything - a nyphomaniac mum, a nasty-tempered husband, a group of local yobbos (sorry, Brit expression and I can't think of a translation - rough-necks I guess!), Joyce in jeopardy, a dear old tramp (are there any left, I wonder, in England?) who has a somewhat murky past, and lives with foxes and an owl in the woods..... and on and on! I always find Midsomer charming, but this episode is a little more charming than most and I confess that I return to it quite often. The other three episodes in this set ("Bad Tidings", "The Fisher King", and "Sins of Commission") introduce Dan Scott, Barnaby's new sidekick. I confess that I never got particularly attached to this "new guy" BUT, looking back at some of Gavin Troy's antics in the beginning, he annoyed the heck out of me too; however, it didn't stop me watching and he eventually grew on me. I suppose "Dan Scott" might have done the same..... or not! In any event, despite or in spite of the good sergeant, each of these three episodes is as carefully crafted as we have come to expect from this series. I think this set is a great addition to the collection of any Midsomer fan. Long Live Midsomer!
