Robert Armstrong practically repeats his role from King Kong as a Broadway producer who lures Jill Young (Terry Moore) and Joe, an ape she raised from baby (a splendidly realized stop-motion character created by Willis O'Brien, the creator behind Kong), to New York as the star attraction at his new nightclub. Caged in a cramped basement holding cell, the unhappy Joe finally goes berserk after a trio of drunks ply him with alcohol, and the city rules him a menace. In a desperate attempt to save Joe from execution, Jill rounds up her friends and confidants (including beefy love interest Ben Johnson) for a jailbreak. This human-scale drama is more subdued than its inspiration, but the nightclub rampage remains a terrifying scene in its mad destruction; and the climax, involving a raging fire at an orphanage (have these filmmakers no shame?!), still impresses. --Sean Axmaker

Well, for starters, I first heard about the above-mentioned movie, "Mighty Joe Young" when I was just a little kid growing in Cuba from a friend of the family who had seen it in the local movie theater. Incidentally, the aforesaid was dubbed in Spanish. Anyhow, then when I first came to America in 1965 and two years after we had all moved into our new house back in 1967 I had the opportunity to see "Mighty Joe Young" on television. Now let me tell you that was way back when they used to show the REALLY GOOD movies on television. Anyhow, since I was a kid I did indeed liked and enjoyed watching the movie and as a matter of fact, I even wrote a letter to our family friend to tell her that I had seen the movie. Now being a kid I was unable to grasp its meaning. Then around 1992 or 1993 I was able to see it again on video and I enjoyed twice, perhaps three times as much than when I was a kid. Now as far as my rating is concerned, well, I give it FIVE SOLID stars-as an amateur movie critic. And finally, as far as remakes go, well, they can have them! Because when it comes to the classics I like to see the REAL MacCoy! And believe me, there is aboslutely NOTHING like the ORIGINAL!

Without a doubt , one of the greatest adventure/fanasty films of all time. It imprinted on me at a very young (consumed 5 times a week on WOR ch.9 "Million Dollar Movie" in NYC )Watching it again , I was astounded at how fine a feature it is! Comedy,action,romance & a cowboy hero to boot . They really don't make 'em like this anymore. A favorite of most adults of my era when asked,some might consider it a children's film. It's a "family" film a grown-up can watch without making excuses to leave the room. "Don't worry ,Miss. Ain't no one gonna shoot Joe now." You betcha..............

Charming and sweet version of the Kong story with most of the same cast and crew from King Kong and Son of Kong return to do one more movie about a giant ape who goes berserk in the city when he should have been left alone in Africa. GOOD effects and the acting is better then average, the 1998 remake of this film was terrible.
