Product Description

Non-contact voltage detector for residential, commercial, and industrial applications. The Milwaukee 2201-20 comes equipped with a work light 3x brighter than the competition. Rated at CAT III 600-Volt, it has a range of 90-to-600-Volt. It is sensitive enough to indicate which side of an outlet is live. Designed for Milwaukee's proprietary accessory mount rail system, it mounts easily onto Milwaukee's DMM (2217) and Laser Temp-Gun (2266) to add voltage detection and a work light to each tool. Nothing but HEAVY DUTY.

This is the third voltage detector I've purchased, and the only one that actually works the way I want it to. I need a true non-contact detector, one I can use to test insulated wire, cords, and outlets, without taking anything apart. This one is sensitive enough to get a read on anything I've tried it on, and I don't have to test mutiple points on the line to get it to work. Also, since there's no probe, I have no issues with getting it to slide into an outlet slot; just touch the outlet face, and get your reading. The built-in light could be handy, but I haven't needed it yet, so at this point it seems a little like a pointless add-on, but that's better than NOT having a feature you want. If you're doing renovations, maintenance, or just changing some fixtures, this guy will come in very handy.

The only complaint I would mention is that there's no audible signal, only a warning light. A beep would be nice, but I can live without it.

HASH(0x9b53975c) out of 5 stars Expensive Penlight Dec 14 2009

This is my third or forth voltage detector of this form factor, and by far the worst. Yes, it does have a nice LED light that works about as well as all the other LED lights out there, but that's not why I bought it.

It is roughly as sensitive as most other detectors, but not as sensitive as my current Green Lee favorite.

Says Milwaukee on the red and black body.
Has a light.

No audible signal
When it does detect voltage, it is hard to tell because all that happens is a tiny "V" shaped window on one side glows red. This tiny one-sided alert is hard to see in daylight or at any angle other than straight on. Look closely at the pictures in the ad. See the tiny glowing red bolt? Hardly a lifesaver.

Don't get me wrong. I love Milwaukee tools and have plenty of them. But in this case, keep on looking. I know of at least three others that are better, cheaper, and more sensitive.

Update: After writing the above review, I accidently left the device on killing the battery. When I replaced the AAA cell that came with the unit, it was much more sensitive and the glowing "V" was much brighter and blinked. That means the unit is comparable in sensitivity to other units, but you must have line of sight to the "V" rather than the a 360 degree alert like most others. Further, since it did seem battery-sensitive, that could misled users into missing a live wire since the unit's performance can change. The other units I have seem to hold their sensitivity, but the alert sound and light suffers as the battery discharges.

HASH(0x9b538918) out of 5 stars adequate but not impressive July 28 2010

The button is too easy to press and positioned badly. it is always being turned on which results in a drained battery when I actually need it. The light is nice and volt detector works fine but I would take my Fluke LVD1 Volt Light over this thing any day. The voltage detection in the fluke is pretty worthless but it is the best and most useful clip light I have found so far.

HASH(0x9b369c00) out of 5 stars Small and works well Nov. 26 2009

This voltage detector works well and is very small - making it convenient. The light is bright and very useful when crawling around in ceilings or in crawl spaces. All in all, I grab for this about twice as often as my Fluke detector (which is also a great unit).
